BETHANY - It was all about defense for Southern Nazarene Thursday night in their rival showdown with Oklahoma Baptist, as they extended their win streak to three in the 65-50 win in the Sawyer Center.
The Crimson Storm (10-3, 7-2 GAC) started out shooting poorly, finishing at 31.6 percent in the first quarter, but figured things out as they concluded at a 41.7 percent shooting clip. The Bison were held to 34.7 percent shooting in the game and were forced into seventeen turnovers.
Many players came up big for the Storm, but Sonia Sarda starred more than anyone. Sarda had a monster game scoring 15 points on 7-of-15 shooting while dishing out seven assists and six rebounds. Jaycee Soap shot absolutely lights out from the arc, knocking down five threes, en route to 15 points. Soap also brought down six rebounds in the game. Abby Niehues again led the way defensively with three blocks, while she scored eight points on an efficient 4-of-shooting from the field.
Myriam Garcia was also a positive contributor off the bench as she scored nine rebounds while coming down with six rebounds. Irene Perez chipped in a cool eight points and grabbed three rebounds to make use of her minutes.
SNUÂ trailed the entire first quarter, but flipped the switch to outscore OBU in the second quarter of play. The Crimson Storm took the lead in the first two minutes and never looked back.Â
Southern Nazarene scored a total of 18 points in the quarter, shooting 7-of-14 from the floor. Overall, the first half was a defensive battle as the Storm forced 10 total turnovers.Â
In the third, SNU continued their trend of great defense, forcing OBU to shoot 3-of-15 from the field. Sonia Sarda came up huge for the Storm in the third as she collected seven points while Jaycee Soap put in a pair of threes, adding to their growing lead.Â
In the fourth, the Bison came out flying as they registered 16 points to the 12 of the Storm, shooting at 55.6 percent. However, the margin was too great as the Storm cruised to their seventh Great American Conference win on the season.Â
Southern Nazarene will return to action this Saturday as they play host to the East Central Tigers (3-12, 1-8 GAC). Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
