Lending a Helping Hand

Speight reaches 500 career assists as SNU flattens Harding 96-50.

BETHANY – Just 48 hours ago, Southern Nazarene won by 32 points which was their largest margin of victory this season. They wasted no time in topping that, as they flattened Harding 96-50 inside the Sawyer Center.

Saturday was a historic day on multiple fronts as the 46-point win for the Crimson Storm (11-5, 5-3 GAC) was the program's largest victory since November 2012 when SNU beat Dallas Christian 110-49 on Homecoming. The win also is the largest margin of victory across the Great American Conference this season and the largest margin of victory ever in a GAC game.

On top of the insane scoring margin, senior guard Micah Speight reached a historic milestone as well. When the guard picked up his seventh assist on a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Ashton Charles, he reached the 500-assist plateau. Only five players in SNU history have reached 500 assists and Speight becomes just the third player in GAC history to dish out 500 dimes.

Speight was simply sensational once again as he finished with 18 points with all of them coming from behind the three-point line. He went 6-for-7 from the three-point line and also finished with his first double-double of the season with 10 assists to go along with a game-high four steals as well. Jhonathan Dunn was equally as impressive as he poured in a game-high 28 points on 11-of-18 shooting to go along with three rebounds. Dunn finished the contest just eight points shy of reaching 2,000 career points.

It seems that Ashton Charles' shooting touch has found its way back for the Crimson Storm as the junior finished with 16 points on 4-of-5 shooting from downtown. He also added two rebounds and two assists as well. Manny Dixon and Morris Wilson II each put up seven points as Wilson II grabbed five boards and Dixon corralled two. Quenton Coleman chipped in five points while Brady Mulkey, Karsten Berg, and Josiah Johnson all finished with three points. Karlyn Kenner also added four points, four rebounds, and three steals.

Southern Nazarene was red hot on Saturday and there was nothing that the Bisons (6-8, 1-7 GAC) could do. The Storm shot a season-best 56.7 percent from the floor and buried 17 three-pointers in the contest. It is now the ninth time this season that SNU has converted at least 10+ triples in a game. They shot 63 percent from downtown which is also the best clip they've had this season.

Outside of that, the Storm dominated every other facet of the game. They out-rebounded Harding 34-26, dished out 19 assists compared to eight for the Bisons, and took away 12 steals to just five of HU. SNU forced 19 Harding turnovers and converted those into 28 points on the other end.

Just like Thursday night, the Crimson Storm never trailed in the contest as they sky-rocketed out of the gate to a 17-5 lead. It seemed that Dunn and Speight just kept trading triples as the lead ballooned to 29-7 just eight minutes in. Dunn knocked down a bucket to make it 42-15 with 4:22 left as SNU took a 51-21 advantage into the break.

After scoring 22 of his 28 points in the first half, Dunn took a backseat and let some of his teammates in on the action in the second half. The Storm shot 51.6 percent in the final 20-minutes as their lead rose to 50 with just five minutes left in the game. For the second straight contest, head coach Adam Bohac was able to empty his bench as SNU cruised to their second win in a row.

Southern Nazarene is back in action next Thursday night inside the Sawyer for the third of four straight games as they battle rival Oklahoma Baptist. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
