2,000 Reasons Why

Dunn reaches 2,000 career points in 79-62 victory over OBU.

BETHANY – Southern Nazarene extended their winning streak over Oklahoma Baptist to nine on Thursday evening with a 79-62 victory inside the Sawyer Center.

Amidst the dominant win for the Crimson Storm (11-5, 6-3 GAC), it was Jhonathan Dunn who stole the show right from the opening tip. The senior guard needed eight points to become the first male athlete in Great American Conference history to reach 2,000 career points and just the second player ever in SNU history to accomplish the feat. How long did it take him? 7 minutes and 7 seconds.

Dunn torched the Bison (10-5, 5-4 GAC) for all 40 minutes, as he finished with a game-high 28 points on 9-of-16 shooting to go along with seven rebounds and two assists. He also went to the free-throw line eight times and converted seven of those attempts. Micah Speight continued his spectacular play inside Sawyer as he finished with 24 points on 9-of-13 shooting while converting an eye-popping 5-of-7 tries from 3-point range. The flashy point guard added seven assists and three rebounds as well.

Tyler Williams made his first appearance for SNU since November 2nd after rehabbing from foot surgery, and the senior made a big splash in his return. He came off the bench to score eight points while knocking down 2-of-2 3-point tries in 16 minutes. Morris Wilson II and Ashton Charles each chipped in seven points as Wilson II pulled down three rebounds and Charles dished out a career-high four assists.

Southern Nazarene's hot shooting on their home floor continued as they shot over 50 percent from the floor for the third straight contest. They finished with a 54 percent shooting clip while lighting up the scoreboard from 3-point range, going 13-for-23. The Storm went 12-for-13 from the charity stripe despite being out-rebounded by the Bison 26-25. SNU forced 13 OBU turnovers and both teams dished out 14 assists.

Oklahoma Baptist scored the first bucket of the game to take a 2-0 lead and after that, the Bison never led again. SNU jumped out to a 15-8 lead six minutes in and later pushed it to 29-17. Their advantage reached 16 when a Charles free-throw made it a 40-24 Storm lead as head coach Adam Bohac and company took a 42-26 margin into halftime.

After shooting 50 percent in the first half, the Crimson Storm got even hotter in the second. They shot 58.3 percent in the final 20 minutes while knocking down 7-of-10 (70%) 3-point tries. Their lead over OBU quickly ballooned to 20 before the Bison cut it to 12. Just when it looked like Oklahoma Baptist was going to try and get back in the game, SNU closed the door in the final seven minutes to pick up their third straight victory.

Southern Nazarene will be back in action Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. as they host East Central inside the Sawyer Center.
