BETHANY - The Southern Nazarene softball team connected on four home runs on Monday afternoon to lead to a series split with Southeastern Oklahoma State, winning the first contest 11-5 before dropping game two 9-5.
In pregame, Southern Nazarene took the time to honor their lone senior in
Riley Kalman as she competed in her final home contest of the year.
The Savage Storm struck first in game one as they took advntage of a SNU error with two down to take the 1-0 lead.Â
However, in the bottom half, SNU got rolling as
Mahina Sauer began with a one out double while
Hailie Fellers followed with a double of her own to even it up at one a piece.Â
Two batters later,
Skye Ah Yat stepped to the plate and singled to right while
Kai Sanchez added a RBI single of her own to push the lead to 3-2.
Southeastern cut it to 3-2 in the second, but Southern Nazarene broke it open in the third, using the long ball to increase their lead.
Caitlyn Curlee got it started with a line shot over the right center wall while Sanchez showed some oppo power as she muscled one over the right field wall to make it 5-2.
The Savage Storm cut it back down to 5-4, but SNU again pushed the lead back to three runs as
Reilly Schlarb singled to right to score two runs.
Leading 7-5 in the sixth, SNU put the game out of reach as the senior Kalman blasted a two-run bomb over the center field wall. Ah Yat and
Peyton Robinson added RBI singles to take the lead to 11-5.
Mahina Sauer (W, 3-4) got the start and went 5.0 innings, allowing one earned run on six hits to go with two strikeouts.
Brooklyn Sparkman added two innings of work and struck out four.
Offensively, SNU banged out 16 hits as Sanchez and Sauer were each 3-for-3. Sanchez added a homer, two RBI, two runs scored, and stolen base while Sauer had a double and two runs scored. Curlee was 3-for-4 with a homer, a RBI, and three runs scored while Ah Yat and Kalman each drove in two.
In the second contest, SNU did themselves no favors as they spotted Southeastern a 6-0 lead in one inning.Â
SNU got three back in the third as Sauer and Fellers each drove in a run, and then proceeded to one in the fourth, and one in the fifth on a solo shot from
Jacey James.
However with all the momentum heading SNU's way, Southeastern took it back with a three run sixth inning to close the game out with a 9-5 win.
Caitlyn Curlee took the loss for SNU while Sauer and
Cheyenne Laguna saw time in relief. Laguna pitched 5.1 innings and struck out five in the contest.
Sanchez was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored while
Victoria Rodriguez was 1-for-1 with a run scored and a walk. Feller had a RBI triple while Ah Yat had a double and a RBI. James and Sauer were each 1-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored.
SNU closes their home season with a 13-9 record as they move to 22-24 overall and 17-18 in the GAC. They hit the road next week to Weatherford, Okla. to take on Southwestern Oklahoma State in a four game series beginning on Friday at 2 p.m.
