BETHANY - The Southern Nazarene softball team claimed their second GAC series of the season as they rolled the Henderson State Reddies on Saturday afternoon at the SNU Softball Complex. SNU rolled to a 6-1 win in game one before following up with a dominating 14-2 (5) in game two.
In the first game, Henderson State jumped out to a 1-0 in the top of hte first, but Southern Nazarene got one back in the bottom half of the first thanks to an error from the Reddies. SNU would move ahead 2-1 in the second inning on another Henderson error.
The Crimson Storm maintained that lead thanks to an excellent outing again from
Brooklyn Sparkman as she continued to keep the Reddies in check.
In the fourth, SNU moves ahead 3-1 on a RBI single from
Hailie Fellers. One inning later, SNU exploded for three runs in the fifth to push their lead out to 6-1. SNU got a RBI single from
Mahina Sauer and took advantage of more errors from the Reddies, who have five total on the day.
Sparkman would go the distance, striking out seven in the process as she finished off the game to give SNU a 6-1 victory.
Sauer was 2-for-3 with a RBI and two runs scored while Jacey Kames was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Fellers had the only other RBI while
Kai Sanchez and
Kaley Knox each had a hit and a run scored.
In game two, it was a similar start as Henderson, again, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first, but SNU, again, responded as Sauer ripped a double to center to even the game at one while
Skye Ah Yat followed that up with a double of her own to make it a 2-1 game.
SNU put the game out of reach in the second inning as they put a seven spot on the board. James led off the inning with a hit by pitch while Feller followed with a double to right center. Robinson would drive one in followed by a walk to Sauer to load the bases.
Riley Kalman would single up the middle to score two runs while Ah Yat followed with a RBI single.
Caitlyn Curlee stepped to the plate and smacked a double to the gap in right center while James came back to the plate and doubled to left center to make it a 9-1 game.
Henderson got a run back in the third, but Brown got it right back in the third with her third RBI of the game, singling to left to make it 10-2.
SNU put four more runs on the board in the fourth as James drove one in followed by a RBI from
Brooklyn Sullivan. Riley Schlarb capped the big inning with a two RBI single to make it 14-2.
Sparkman (W, 9-0) checked into the game early after
Cheyenne Laguna exited early and proceeded to throw her second complete game as she got all three SNU wins on the weekend.
Kalman was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI while Curlee was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBi, and two runs scored. James was 2-for-2 with two RBI while Sauer was 1-for-2 with a RBI and two runs scored. Knox and Sanchez each scored a pair of runs in the contest.
SNU moves to 13-10 overall and 8-4 in the GAC, currently sitting in third place in the conference early on. The Crimson Storm will return to the diamond on Friday at 4 p.m. as they head to Russellville, Ark. for a four game series against Arkansas Tech.
