SNU Returns to GAC Championship Looking to Defend Title

3/6/2019 8:05:00 PM

POSTSEASON GAME NOTE

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. -
A year ago, it was simply a dream. One that became a reality as the Southern Nazarene basketball team came into the GAC Championship weekend and walked away with their first tournament title. One year later, SNU looks to build the foundation of a potential dynasty as they look for their second straight title and automatic birth into the NCAA Tournament.

SNU finished the year 25-5 and 18-4 in the GAC as they are now a combined 52-7 and 39-5 in the last two seasons. Adam Bohac, the two-time reigning GAC Coach of the Year, is in his 11th season as head coach of the Crimson Storm. They are led by 2018 GAC Player of the Year and three-time First Team All-GAC selection, Jhonathan Dunn, who averages 17.8 pts/gm while shooting 46% from the field.

The now two-time reigning GAC Defensive Player of the Year, Noah Starkey, will be down low in the post, averaging 14.6 pts/gm. 7.5 reb/gm, and 56 blocks while two-time First Team All-GAC selection, Micah Speight, runs the show as point guard, averaging 14.0 pts/gm to go with 156 assists and 56 steals.

It'll be a familiar foe in the first round as SNU will play Ouachita for the fourth consecutive season in the quarterfinals. SNU is 1-2 against Ouachita, losing their first two quarterfinal games to the Tigers before defeating Ouachita last season 80-66. SNU has won five in a row over Ouachita including a 64-58 win at home earlier this season and a 86-71 win in Arkadelphia.

If SNU goes on to win, SNU will meet the winner of No. 4 seed Southern Arkansas and No. 5 seed Henderson State, two teams SNU holds a combined 4-0 record against. On the other side of the bracket, No. 2 Southeastern Oklahoma State is the favorite to advance, the only team SNU is 0-2 against this season.

Oklahoma Baptist checks in at No. 3 while East Central in No. 6. Arkansas-Monticello comes in at No. 7, a team SNU dropped their regular season finale to on Saturday.

The Savage Storm and Boll Weevils lead things off on Thursday at 2:15 while SNU takes the floor at 8 p.m. SAU and HSU will meet on Friday night at 5:45 while OBU and ECU will take the nightcap at 8:00 p.m. If they advance, SNU will play the semifinal contest at 5:45 p.m. on Saturday and the championship game at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
