MONTICELLO, Ark. — Southern Nazarene opened their series with Arkansas Monticello by dropping both games of a doubleheader 13-3 and 9-4 on Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Crimson Storm were unable to slow down the Weevils and their offensive attack as UAM tallied 26 total hits in the two games.
Tyler Thompson got the start on the mound in the series opener, as the junior took his fourth loss of the season. He was one of five SNU pitchers to make an appearance in the opener as none tossed more than an inning of action.
Ryan Mills,
Noah Serrano,
David Lechuga, and
Landon Walker were the Storm pitchers who appeared in game on.
Â
Sophomore
Cole Lee led the way at the plate in the opener as he finished 2-for-4 with two RBI's. Also recording two hits in the game was
Shelby Reese who went 2-for-3 at the dish. Lee was the only SNU player to record an RBI in the opener as
Jefferson Harris,
Cobi Ceron,
Jack Campbell, and
Garrett Perez each recorded one hit in the contest.
Â
After Arkansas-Monticello took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, Southern Nazarene responded in the top of the second when Harris scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 1-1. The Weevils then scored 11 unanswered runs in the next two innings to take a 12-1 lead into the fourth. Lee's double in the top of the fourth scored Cero to make it 12-2 before UAM added another run in the bottom of the fourth to increase their lead to 13-2. Lee knocked a single to right field in the top of the sixth to score
Tanner Ladon, but the Weevils lead held strong as they took the first game of the series.
Â
Jefferson Harris got the start on the bump in the nightcap game as the senior took his fifth loss of the season. He allowed eight runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings while striking out three UAM batters in the process.
Cole Lee and
Jarrett Phillips each saw action on the mound for SNU as well.
Â
Harris made his presence felt at the plate as he finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored in game two of the series. Also recording RBI's for the Crimson Storm were
Shelby Reese who went 1-for-4,
Cobi Ceron who finished 1-for-3, and
Elijah Brady.
Connor Dayton scored a run as well as he went 1-for-2, while Lee also scored a run and finished 1-for-4 at the dish.
Â
Southern Nazarene took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second when Ceron's single scored Harris, and Brady's groundout to shortstop scored Dayton. UAM wasted no time however as the Weevils pushed two runs across in the bottom of the second to tie the game 2-2. Just like the opening game, Monticello used a big rally in the three innings to extend their lead, as they scored seven unanswered runs to take a 9-2 lead into the sixth.
Â
SNU cut into the lead in the final inning and tried to make some noise as Reese's single to left field scored Perez to make it 9-3, and Harris' double scored Lee to make it 9-4, but the Weevils closed the door on any kind of Storm rally.
Â
Southern Nazarene will close out the series with Arkansas-Monticello tomorrow afternoon with one final game beginning at 1 p.m.
