OKLAHOMA CITY - The Southern Nazarene softball team got a big outing 3-for-3 outing from
Mahina Sauer as they got a nice bounce back victory over the Newman Jets on Friday afternoon at the Tom Heath Softball Field on the campus of Oklahoma Christian.
It started in the first as
Peyton Robinson and
Jacey James drew back-to-back walks before Sauer laced a double into left center, scoring Robinson and giving the Crimson Storm the 1-0 advantage. One batter later, a passed ball would score James to push the lead to 2-0. SNU looked to have a big inning brewing, but a double play and a fly out kept the score at bay.
Brooklyn Sparkman took the circle and spun a gem, shutting down the Jet bats for the majority of the game. Newman only had one hit through five innings as Sparkman kept them off balance on this cold day.
However, the SNU bats were also frozen as they never could quite add on to their lead as it remained a 2-0 game going into the bottom half of the sixth. The Jets led the inning off with a single, but Sparkman got the next two outs and looked to get out of the inning. However, Newman got a two-run homer to left to knot the game up at two a piece.
In the seventh, Robinson got it starting with a one-out single on a bunt and stole second. After a walk to James, Sauer came to the plate and came through with a huge RBI single to left to push SNU back ahead 3-2.
Sparkman moves to the seventh and this time put the Jets down in order, getting a strikeout and two infield pop ups to get one of her first complete games in her career. Sparkman (W, 3-1) pitched all seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits to go with six strikeouts.
Sauer led the offense with her three hits to go with two RBI and a walk while
Kai Sanchez was 2-for-4. Robinson was 1-for-3 with two runs scored as well as two stolen bases while
Caitlyn Curlee had the only other hit for SNU.
The Crimson Storm moves to 4-6 on the season and will close out the UCO/OC Festival tomorrow afternoon as they take on a pair of Colorado schools beginning with Colorado-Colorado Springs at 3 p.m. followed by a rematch with Colorado Christian at 5 p.m.
