Heating Up

SNU shoots a season-high 55.8 percent in 86-72 victory in Weatherford.

WEATHERFORD Okla. --- Lightning can strike at any point in a storm, and in Southern Nazarene's case on Saturday, it was early in the second half.

Jhonathan Dunn scored 14 points in two minutes, 55 seconds right after halftime to stake the Crimson Storm (7-3, 2-1 GAC) to a 24-point lead. SNU never looked back as they knocked off Southwestern Oklahoma State, 86-72, at Pioneer Cellular Event Center. The Storm led by as many as 25 points in the second half and went 15-for-31 from 3-point range for the game. The Bulldogs (5-4, 1-2 GAC) shot a very efficient 55.6 percent in the second half, but were unable to keep pace after the torrid start to the second half by the Crimson Storm, which won their seventh consecutive matchup in the series.

Dunn finished with a game-high 29 points, rebounding after his first single-digit scoring performance of the season last week against Oklahoma Christian. He was 8-of-17 from the field and knocked down six 3-pointers. Micah Speight had 20 points and seven assists, playing the full 40 minutes. Brady Mulkey had a career-high 13 points on a perfect night. Mulkey went 6-for-6 from the field, including a 3-pointer, his second of the season. He also chipped in three rebounds, two assists and two blocks.

Damion Thornton led the way for SWOSU with 29 points, including an 11-for-11 performance from the free throw line. Chris Braggs, Jr. had 11 points while Anthony Love chipped in with 10 points off the bench. SNU started both halves on fire from the field, as they began the first half 8-of-10 from the field and 4-of-6 from 3-point range. That onslaught staked the Storm to a 22-10 lead with 13:02 remaining in the first half. SWOSU cut the lead down to three on a 3-pointer from Love, but SNU methodically pushed the margin back to 10 on a bucket by Nick Davis. It was Davis' first action returning from an injury since the season opener against Missouri Western State back on Nov. 1.

The two teams went back and forth before a Mulkey basket with 39 seconds left in the half staked the Storm to a 43-33 lead at the break. SNU held the Bulldogs to just 31 percent shooting in the first 20 minutes.

The second half was the Dunn Show, as the senior poured in 19 points, including the aforementioned 14 points in about three minutes to open the half. Dunn knocked down three 3-pointers on the first four SNU possessions, forcing a SWOSU timeout. After the break, Dunn scored on a backdoor layup off a feed from Morris Wilson, then corralled a loose ball and hit another 3-pointer to turn a 43-33 halftime lead into a 59-35 lead with 16:53 remaining in the game.

The Bulldogs weathered the storm a bit, rattling off a 16-4 run to cut the deficit to 13 with 10:25 remaining. SNU pushed the lead back to 19 at 77-58 with 6:01 remaining, courtesy of another Dunn 3-pointer. The closest SWOSU would get the rest of the way was 11 points, as SNU had an answer at every turn to pick up their first conference road win of the season.

Southern Nazarene is back in action Dec. 14 against Southeastern Oklahoma State at the Sawyer Center. Tip time is set for 3:05 p.m., and the game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN3 on ESPN.com and the ESPN App.
