BETHANY – They say the bright lights brings out something different in the best players, and Southern Nazarene's
Jhonathan Dunn shined brighter than any player on the floor on Saturday afternoon.
The senior was simply unstoppable, pouring in a season-high 34 points on 12-of-19 shooting as the Crimson Storm (8-3, 3-1 GAC) took down undefeated No. 14 ranked Southeastern Oklahoma State inside the Sawyer Center. The game was featured live on ESPN3 but that didn't stop Dunn and company from lighting up the scoreboard. To go along with his 34 points, Dunn added a career-high 15 rebounds as he knocked down 4-of-8 three-point attempts. He was a monster on Saturday, as the Savage Storm (5-1, 3-1 GAC) had no answer as the senior played all 40 minutes in the contest.
As good as Dunn was, senior point guard
Micah Speight quietly dominated the Savage Storm as well. He flirted with a triple-double as he scored 18 points and added a game-high nine assists, and pulled down seven rebounds. He didn't have his best shooting performance but held the GAC's leading assist man in Southeastern's Adam Dworsky to 5-of-13 shooting and just six assists.
Ashton Charles came off the Crimson Storm bench and added 12 points on a couple of threes to go along with five rebounds in the game.
Morris Wilson II added six points and two rebounds while
Josiah Johnson chipped in four points as well.
Southern Nazarene's defense was on full display for the hundreds in attendance and thousands watching online as they held Southeastern Oklahoma State to a 36.7 shooting percentage in the contest. They forced nine Savage Storm turnovers and held them to 36 percent from downtown. SNU dominated the glass, out-rebounding SEOSU 37-27 for the game. SNU took advantage of their trips to the free-throw line as they made 13-of-15 while Southeastern went 12-for-17.
Shortly after tip, it looked as though the No. 14 ranked Savage Storm were here to make a statement as they leapt out to a 10-1 lead just three minutes into the game. SNU head coach
Adam Bohac was able to get his team back on track after a timeout as they went on a 20-5 run to take a 21-15 lead. After increasing their lead to eight two different times in the first half, the Crimson Storm pushed it to double-digits with a Speight layup to make it 32-22 with 5:07 to play in the half. SNU's defense continued to hold strong as they held the Savage Storm to 28 first-half points, the lowest all season for Southeastern.
After taking a 39-28 lead into halftime, Southern Nazarene knew that Southeastern Oklahoma State was going to make a push. The Savage Storm saw their field goal percentage rise to 42.9 percent, but the Crimson Storm shot 53.8 percent to close the game and never really gave them a chance. After SEOSU cut the lead to 41-32, SNU went on an 11-5 run to increase their advantage to 52-37. Southeastern was able to cut it to 68-58 with 2:54 to play, but that was the closest the Savage Storm came as SNU cruised to their third straight victory.
Southern Nazarene has one final game before Christmas as they take on NAIA's Southwestern College (Kan.) next Wednesday evening. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside the Sawyer Center.
