Spreading Christmas Cheer

Storm rout Southwestern 87-57 to close 2019

BETHANY – There will be no coal in the Christmas stockings this year for Southern Nazarene, as they entered the holiday break on a high note with a dominant 87-57 victory over Southwestern College inside the Sawyer Center on Wednesday night.

The Crimson Storm (9-3) secured their fourth straight victory of the season as they knocked down 16 three-pointers, the most since they converted 18 against Northwest Missouri State earlier this year. They have now hit 15+ triples in five contests to begin the season. SNU shot 41.3 percent from the floor while holding the Moundbuilders (10-6) to a 35.5 percent clip. The Storm committed a season-low four turnovers in the game and scored 15 points off 11 SC turnovers.

After securing the USBWA Men's Division II National Player of the Week, Jhonathan Dunn did not slow down his scoring barrage on Wednesday evening. The senior poured in 33 points on 11-of-19 shooting while knocking down 6-of-13 tries from downtown. It is Dunn's sixth 30-point game of the season and on Wednesday night he moved into third all-time on SNU's scoring list, passing Lindy Waters (1983-1986, 87-88) with 1,884 career points. He also added four rebounds, three assists, three steals, and three blocks.

Micah Speight stuffed the stat sheet once again for Southern Nazarene as the senior point guard tallied 15 points, pulled down a season-high nine rebounds, and dished out five assists in the contest. Dunn and Speight were the only SNU scorers in double figures as Ashton Charles added nine points and four rebounds while Karlyn Kenner chipped in six points. Brady Mulkey and Manny Dixon each scored five points in the game and Josiah Johnson added four for SNU.

The Crimson Storm came out a little sluggish to open the game as Southwestern jumped out to a 12-8 lead in their third game in three nights. The Moundbuilders later pushed that lead to 19-14 before head coach Adam Bohac got his guys into gear. SNU responded on an impressive 18-0 run that featured three triples from Dunn and the Storm led 32-19 with 6:16 left in the first half. After that, they closed the half and took a 41-29 advantage into the locker room.

Southern Nazarene held the Moundbuilders to a 33 percent shooting clip in the second half and forced a handful of fouls out of SC. The Storm shot 20 free throws in the second half alone as they pushed their lead to 63-41 eight minutes in. That lead for SNU later ballooned to 70-44 before the Storm were able to cruise home in the final eight minutes of the game.

SNU heads into Christmas break with a 9-3 record and riding a four-game winning streak as they hit the road after the New Year with a pair of GAC contests in Arkansas. They take on Ouachita Baptist in Arkadelphia on January 2nd with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
