Volleyball Falls to GAC-Leading Oklahoma Baptist

SHAWNEE, Okla. - The Southern Nazarene University volleyball team headed to Shawnee, Oklahoma on Tuesday night for a key Great American Conference battle with the Oklahoma Baptist University Bison. The teams met to open a two-match week for both squads, and OBU came into the match with a nine-match winning streak on the line.

Unfortunately for SNU, the Storm was not enough to stop the Bison.

OBU (14-3, 4-0 GAC) took control early, and though SNU (11-6, 2-2 GAC) battled and closed the gap in each set, the Bison were still able to complete the three-set sweep.

SNU took the first two points of the night, but OBU answered with a 6-1 run to take a 6-3 lead. With the Bison leading 10-6, OBU went on a 10-3 run to put the first set out of reach, and the Bison claimed the opening stanza 25-11. OBU quickly opened a 9-4 lead in the second frame, but SNU battled back. The Crimson Storm put together a 6-2 run to pull to within one at 11-10, but OBU answered with another 10-3 run to take a 20-13 lead on their way to the 25-18 win in the set to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The third set was tight throughout. The teams traded the lead four times in the period, but in the end, it was the Bison who claimed the set 26-24 and took the sweep in the match.

It was a slow night, statistically, for SNU as well. The Crimson Storm had two players - Bailee Turang and Kayla Thomas - with eight kills each to lead the offense. Kylie Smith dished out 29 assists, and she also led the way with eight digs.

SNU will return home on Thursday night to take on the Tigers of East Central University (2-15, 1-3 GAC). The match is slated for 7 p.m.
