RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — For some strange reason, Southern Nazarene feels at home in an unlikely place. Eight of SNU's nine wins have come on the road, including a 5-3 win at Arkansas Tech Friday night.
Â
The Crimson Storm (9-12, 5-8 GAC) already have more overall and Great American Conference wins then past two seasons and are just four wins away from tying the most wins in GAC play in school history.
Â
Austin Cooper has been a big reason for the Storm's success as the senior picked up his sixth save of the year, which is already the third most in a single-season in school history. He threw the final 1.1 innings and did not allow a hit. That also moved his career total to eight which is tied for second all-time in school history as well.
Ryan Mills (3-3) picked up the win as he tossed the first six innings and gave up just two runs on six hits. He also struck out two.
Â
Emilio Escobedo was just a single short of the cycle as the freshman went 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Joe Toilolo was also 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored while
Cole Lee went 2-for-4.
Â
The Crimson Storm didn't waste time getting on the board as
Cole Wagner hit is third home run of the year with he belted a two-out solo home run to left field to give SNU a 1-0 lead. The Wonder Boys tied it in the bottom half, but SNU pushed three more across in the second to lead 4-1.
Â
Southern Nazarene retook the lead on a
Joe Toilolo single that scored
Emilio Escobedo before Toilolo scored on a wild pitch to put SNU up 3-1. The final run of the game came on a Wagner sacrifice fly to center to score
Jake Vernon.
Â
Tech added cut it to 4-2 in the third and 4-3 in the seventh, but SNU got one back in the top of the eighth to lead 5-3 when Escobedo hit his sixth of the year to lead off the inning. Â The Wonder Boys threatened with runners on first and third in the eighth with two outs, but Cooper struck out the next batter to end the inning. He then retired the side in the ninth to end the game.
