HONOLULU, Hawaii - The 11th-ranked Southern Nazarene men's basketball team rebounded from a heartbreaking defeat to Dallas Baptist by shooting 53% from the field and 60% from behind the arc in an 85-72 victory over (RV) Western Washington on Monday afternoon at the Hawaii Convention Center.
SNU was 28 of 53 from the field and 9 of 15 from deep. The Crimson Storm also got to the free throw line 26 times, shooting 77% at the charity stripe. On the other side, the Vikings shot 41% from the field and 27% from behind the arc. The teams were even in rebounds at 34 while SNU had a 13-10 advantage in assists. The Crimson Storm got their turnovers down to 11 while forcing 13 Western Washington turnovers.
Both teams got a basket to fall in the early going before both squads went cold in the first five minutes of the game as turnovers kept both offenses in check. After the slow start, both teams began to heat up as SNU began the half 1 of 6 before going 13 of 21 to close the half.
Jhonathan Dunn scored 19 in the first half slowly built their lead out to eight points.
Micah Speight added seven points in the half while
Ashton Charles scored six off the bench in the opening half as the Crimson Storm held a 43-35 lead at the break.
In the second half, Dunn immediately opened with a 3-pointer to get the lead into double digits at 11. Dunn added two more 3-pointers minutes later and SNU took an 18 point lead at 56-38 with 14:38 to play. Western Washington would battle back and get the game back down to eight in the next four minutes.
Micah Speight would take over, scoring seven points in four minutes of play to push the lead back to 13 with less than eight to play. A 3-pointer from
Logan Hicks followed by a 3-point play from
Noah Starkey gave SNU their biggest lead of the game late in the contest at 19 points (77-58). SNU closed out the contest despite late Viking baskets to earn an 85-72 win.
Dunn finished with a season-high 30 points on a remarkable 10 of 12 shooting. He added three 3-pointers, six rebounds, and two steals in the win. Speight poured in 20 points including 13 in the second half. He picked up three boards and three assists.
Hicks snapped out of a shooting slump with 11 points off the bench on 5 of 7 shooting while Starkey added 10 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks. Trevor Jasinky and Jalen Green led Western Washington with 13 points each.
The Crimson Storm will play their final game in Hawaii tomorrow evening at 8:30 p.m. as they take on the winner of Emmanual and Hawaii Pacific.Â
