WEATHERFORD, Okla. - It was Senior Night.
It was a rowdy atmosphere.
It was a squad that previously beaten SNU.
SWOSU was undefeated at home.
SWOSU is playing for a GAC Regular Season Championship.
And it was all just background noise for Southern Nazarene volleyball on Tuesday evening as they showed great grit and composure, erasing a 2-0 deficit to rally back to stun Southwestern Oklahoma State in five sets on their home floor.
SNU has won four straight matches as it moves to 17-14 overall and 9-6 in the GAC with one match to go. On this night, the Crimson Storm maybe didn't have their absolute best performance, but without doubt SNU faced adversity square on and battled with a ton of heart.
SNU had 56 kills on the night to 30 errors while hitting .131 while SWOSUÂ had 50 kills to 26 errors for a .122 hitting percentage. The Bulldogs held the edge in aces at 10-5 and blocks at 6-4 while the Crimson Storm had the advantage in assists at 54-45 and digs at 105-92.
It was a tough start for the Crimson Storm as Southwestern Oklahoma State seemed to be cruising for a perfect record at home, winning the first two sets convincingly, 25-19 and 25-18. SNU had to turn their focus to the third set and try to extend the match.
SNU got the start they needed in set three as they jumped out to a 5-1 lead. SWOSUÂ immediately responded and took a lead at 7-6 before the Crimson Storm inched back ahead at 10-8. Southern Nazarene maintained that two point lead for most of the set and eventually extended it ou tto four at 20-16.
The Bulldogs rallied and got it within two again late in the set, but SNU remained tough and finished off the set at 25-22 to cut the deficit in half at 2-1.
Another hot start in set four gave SNU an early 8-3 lead as they got three kills from junior
Bailee Turang. SWOSUÂ again cut it down to one, but SNU stayed poised and built a four point lead at 15-11.
The Crimson Storm, leading by two now, gained a huge momentum boost thanks to a five point rally to move ahead 20-13. The Bulldogs tried for a late push to get back in the set, but it was to no avail as SNU eventually closed the set at 25-20 to force a fifth and deciding set.
The Crimson Storm opened up at a 5-3 lead early in set five, but SWOSUÂ would rally fo six of the next seven points to rush ahead 9-6, leaving many to think that No. 2 team in the GAC was finally going to stave off this pesky SNU bunch.
However, SNU regrouped and went on an incredible eight point rally to suddenly take set up match point with a 14-9 lead as sophomore
Kayla Thomas had three kills during the rally. After a Bulldog point, Thomas put the match away with her 16th kill to send the Crimson Storm bench into jubilation and close the set and match, 15-10.
Thomas was unreal especially in the later half of the match, going for 16 kills on a .286 hitting percentage. Turnag added 15 kills while senior
Makenna Hunter and sophomore
Meagan Ellis had 10 kills each. Junior
Kylie Smith had 49 assists while Ellis had two service aces.
Defensively, SNU was excellent later in the match with freshman
Logan Matthews leading the bunch with 26 digs. Turang followed with 23 while senior
Makayla Shonamon had 18 digs. Ellis and Smith were also in double digit digs with 15 and 13, respectively. Thomas, Turang, and Hunter all had two blocks each in the match.
SNU will now return home on Thursday for their regular season finale and their own Senior Night as they welcome in arch-rival Oklahoma Baptist. First serve of the Crimson Storm and Bison is scheduled for 7 p.m. with the Senior Night presentation scheduled before the match.
