BETHANY - After the thrill of victory just two nights ago in spoiling SWOSU's Senior Night, Southern Nazarene felt the agony of defeat, dropping their regular season finale on their own Senior Night to arch-rival Oklahoma Baptist in four sets.
On this night, the Bison were just too much for the Crimson Storm.
Southern Nazarene actually had more kills than Oklahoma Baptist at 47-45, but committed 25 errors to OBU's 14, hitting .147 in the match while their counterpart was up to .212. The Bison held the advantage in aces at 9-4 and blocks at 6-3 while the Crimson Storm had a 45-42 advantage in assists and a 78-72 advantage in digs.
After the emotional festivities of Senior Night concluded, it was OBU who came out firing out of the gate as they raced out to a 7-1 lead. The Bison seemed to have more energy in the early goings as they completely dominated the first set, going for nine kills to one errors while SNU had seven kills and eight errors. Oklahoma Baptist cruised to a 25-11 first set win and the early lead.
However, the energy on the SNU side began to pick up going into the second set. After an even battle early in the set, the Crimson Storm went on a five point rally to take a 15-11 lead. SNU kept their foot on the gas pedal as they finished with 15 kills in the set and evened the match with a 25-16 win.
In set three, the Crimson Storm went for 14 kills, but six errors and a .351 hitting percentage from the BIson slowed SNU as OBU again controlled the set for a 2-1 lead, winning 25-18.
In the fourth set, OBU used a five point rally to open a six point lead early on, and despite the Crimson Storm's best effort to extend the match, it would not be enough as OBU finished the set and the match off with a 25-19 win in set three.
The Crimson Storm were led junior
Bailee Turang with 18 kills on the night while senior
Makenna Hunter and sophomore
Meagan Ellis each had eight kills. Junior
Kylie Smith added 40 assists on the night while freshman
Logan Matthews went for 40 assists.
Defensively, Matthews had 18 digs while Ellis added 16. Smith had 12 digs while Turang had 11 and senior
Makayla Shonamon had 10. Sophomore
Kayla Thomas had three blocks while Ellis and freshman
Grace Miracle each had one.
