Comeback Kids

Southern Nazarene rallies in both matches to win 3-1

BETHANY, Okla. —After the first set of Southern Nazarene's first two matches of the GAC/MIAA Crossover, it looked a bit bleak, but SNU bounced back the same way in both matches to pull off both comebacks.
 
In the opener, the Crimson Storm (5-4), downed Missouri Southern, 3-1 (25-19, 25-16, 25-21, 25-22), before holding off Pittsburg State, 3-1 (20-25, 26-24, 25-22, 26-24), in the final match of the night.
 
In the opener, Southern Nazarene hit just .083 while Missouri Southern hit .238, but SNU didn't let the Lions hit above .200 the rest of the way. SNU bounced back in the second set by hitting .281 and held MSSU to just a -.030 clip. SNU swept the next two sets with relative ease.
 
Bailee Turang tied her career high with 22 kills and hit .306. She also added 16 digs for her second double-double in three matches. Kayla Thomas added 11 kills and a career-high four blocks to go with six digs. Makenna Hunter and Hannah Davis each had 10 kills as Davis notched her first double-double of the season with 10 digs as well. Hunter also added three blocks while Davis had two. Kylie Smith dished out a career-high 51 assists and posted her second double-double with 22 digs. Elyse Berlin had a season-high 25 digs as she added six assists and two aces.
 
SNU as a team hit .212 (61-23-179) and had a season-high nine blocks. The Storm also had a season-high 89 digs.
 
In the nightcap, SNU went to Kayla Thomas who had a career-high 17 kills and added three blocks. Turang was just one dig short of a third straight double-double with nine digs and 11 kills. Smith added 41 assists and 15 digs to go with three blocks. SNU  had 66 digs on the night as Hannah Davis led the way with 16 to go with three blocks. Elyse Berlin added 12 digs while Meagan Ellis had 10.
 
Nearly a mirror image from the first match, SNU got out hit in the first set .216-.083. After that though, Pitt State didn't hit over. 200. The Storm had to hold off a 7-3 run by the Gorillas that tied the match at 24. Turang got set point with a kill before a PSU error tied the match at 1-1. SNU trailed 21-18 in the third set, but the Crimson Storm went on a  7-1 run take a 2-1 lead in the match.
