Storm Split With Bison

SNU fell 4-2 in the opener and won 5-4 in the second game to OBU

BETHANY, Okla. — Kristin Shumaker drove in the game-winning run in extra innings to help Southern Nazarene get a 5-4 win the second game of a Great American Conference doubleheader with Oklahoma Baptist. The Bison took the first game with a 4-2 victory Wednesday afternoon.

After a scoreless first, Southern Nazarene (12-26, 8-18 GAC) scored the first run of the day in the second. Katelyn Brown led the inning off with a single to left then came around to score after Riley Brown doubled to deep right center.

Both teams were held scoreless in the third and fourth. Oklahoma Baptist took the lead in the fifth after scoring three runs to put the score at 3-1. The Crimson Storm were able to get one run back in the bottom of the fifth. Riley Brown led the inning off with a double to right center. Kriston Shumaker moved Riley Brown over to third after hitting a single up the middle. With runners on the corners, a Kyndall Freer-Christopher fielder's choice scored Riley Brown to make it a 3-2 game.

The Bison added a run in the seventh and were able to hold the Storm scoreless in the bottom of the seventh on their way to a 4-2 win.

Katelyn Brown (9-11) took the loss after giving up four runs, on eight hits, in seven innings of work. Riley Brown went 2-for-3 with two doubles, one RBI, and one run scored. Sauer went 1-for-2 with a double and a walk.

In the nightcap, Oklahoma Baptist got out to an early lead, as the Bison were able to score two runs in the first. SNU knotted the game up at 2-2 after plating two runs in the third. Jacey James singled to right, then one batter later, a Sauer home run to right center tied the game up.

Oklahoma Baptist scored one run in the fourth to take the lead at 3-2. The Storm answered with a run of their own in the fourth. With a runner on third, Freer-Christopher hit a sacrifice fly ball to center to score Katelyn Brown. The game didn't remain tied for long as OBU added another run in the fifth to make it a 4-3 game.

Southern Nazarene tied the game up at 4-4 in the fifth after Riley Brown singled through the left side of the field to score Kai Sanchez.

Neither team were able to score in the sixth or the seventh. The Bison led the eighth inning off with a double and were able to load the bases up with just one out. Katelyn Brown recorded the second out of the inning after she struck out the OBU pinch-hitter. With two outs and the bases loaded, the next Bison batter hit a fly ball to center. The ball looked like it was going to drop for a hit and score the possible go ahead run for Oklahoma Baptist. However, a diving Sanchez was able to make an incredible catch in shallow center field to record the third out of the inning. The catch kept the game tied up at 4-4 going into the bottom of the eighth.

Amy Reynolds led the inning off with a double to right center and was pinch run for by Logan Sundbye. Kendal Stockstill laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Sundbye over to third with one out, then a Shumaker fielder's choice scored the game-winning run for the Crimson Storm.

Katelyn Brown got the win as she came in and pitched three innings of relief. Jacey James, Riley Brown, and Katelyn Brown all recorded two hits each. Sauer went 1-for-1 with three walks and a two-run home run. With hits in both games today, Sauer extended her hitting-streak to 12 games.
