Storm Split With Jets

SNU won 8-2 in the opener but fell 13-3 the second game to NU

WICHITA, Kan. — Southern Nazarene traveled up to Wichita Kan. to finish up its last series of non-conference games before getting back into Great American Conference play this weekend. The Crimson Storm took the first game 8-2 but fell to Newman 13-3 in the second game Wednesday afternoon.

Southern Nazarene (8-20) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first as Jacey James was hit by a pitch and came around to score after Mahina Sauer hit a bomb over the right field wall to give the Crimson Storm the lead. Neither the Storm nor the Jets (7-25) could get anything going in the next three innings as SNU held a 2-0 going into the fifth. Newman would strike for its first run in the contest by scoring one run in the bottom of the fifth inning, putting the score at 2-1 going into the top of the sixth.

Southern Nazarene answered back with three runs in the seventh. Sam Smith led the inning off with a lead off double, and then an Amy Reynolds single to left moved Smith over to third. With two runners on and no outs, Riley Brown hit a three-run home run to left center to give the Storm a 5-1 lead. Southern Nazarene kept the hitting frenzy going as Cheyenne Reynolds and James both singled to put runners on first and second with no outs. Kai Snachez tried to advance the runners into scoring position by laying a bunt down, but instead found herself safe at first after a throwing error by Newman. With the bases loaded, Sauer hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Cheyenne Reynolds. Then, two batters later, Katelyn Brown doubled down the left field line to score both James and Sanchez. Going into the bottom of the seventh, Southern Nazarene led 8-1.

The Jets made an attempt to come back in the bottom of the seventh, as they loaded the bases up and scored one run. However, it was too little, too late as Southern Nazarene grabbed an 8-2 victory in the opening game. Katelyn Brown (6-8) got the win after giving up two runs, on six hits, in seven innings of work. Brown also struck out five batters. Sauer went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs and Riley Brown went 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs.

In the nightcap, Southern Nazarene got out to an early lead as a Katelyn Brown single drove in James to give SNU a 1-0 lead. Newman took the lead in the second as they scored three runs of their own to make it a 3-1 game.

The Crimson Storm got a run back in the third as a Smith sacrifice fly scored Sanchez to put the score at 3-2. The Jets pushed their lead to six runs, as a five-run bottom of the third gave Newman an 8-2 lead. SNU made it an 8-3 game when a Sanchez single scored Logan Sundbye.

Newman started to put the game away as they scored one run in the fourth and added four more in the fifth to give the Jets a 13-3 win. Brooke Tate took the loss (0-6) as she gave up 13 runs on ten hits in 4.2 innings of work. James went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Sanchez went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.
