Battle of the Storms

SNU fell 91-86 at home to Southeastern Oklahoma State

BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene didn't have enough gas in the tank to come back and beat Southeastern Oklahoma State, as they dropped a close 91-86 contest to the Savage Storm Thursday night.
 
Abby Boyd led the Crimson Storm (11-11, 8-10 GAC) in scoring with 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting and 2-for-6 from behind the arc. Boyd also added six assists and two rebounds. Danielle Gaddis scored a season high 16 points and notched eight rebounds. Adrienne Berry scored 12 points and tallied eight rebounds. Irene Perez scored 13 points and Callee Mason was the last player to reach double figures as she added 14 points off the bench.
 
Gaddis got off to a good start as she scored the Storm's first seven points as they trailed Southeastern Oklahoma State 9-7 with 4:59 remaining in the first quarter. Southern Nazarene struggled to settle in on the offensive end as they misses ten of their first 16 shots and turned the ball over five times in the opening quarter. At the end of the first quarter, the Savage Storm led 21-14.
 
The Storm started the second quarter on a 9-0 run to take the lead for the first time in the game with score at 23-21. The Savage Storm scored the next four points to retake the lead at 25-23. Southern Nazarene went on a 8-2 run highlighted by a Berry 3-pointer to take the lead with the score at 31-27 with 3:59 remaining in the first half. SNU pushed the lead to nine points by the end of the quarter, their largest lead of the half, leading 43-34 going into intermission. The Storm outscored Southeastern Oklahoma State 29-13 in the second quarter. Southern Nazarene shot 50.0 percent on 17-of-34 shooting while the Savage Storm shot 42.4 percent on 14-of-33 shooting.
 
SOSU opened the third quarter on a 10-2 run to cut the Storm lead to one point with the score at 45-44 with 6:44 remaining in the quarter. The Storm pushed the lead back to six points after Boyd drained a 3-pointer to put the score at 57-51. Southeastern Oklahoma State tied the game up at 59-59 and retook the lead at 62-59 after ending the third quarter on a 9-0 run.
 
Southeastern Oklahoma State opened the fourth quarter on a 5-0 run to extend the lead to eight points.. The Storm cut the lead down to four points after Gaddis hit a jumper to put the score at 69-65 with 6:00 remaining in regulation. The Savage Storm put together a 11-3 run to put the score at 80-68, giving SOSU an 12-point lead, their largest lead of the game. Southern Nazarene went on a 6-0 run to put the score at 82-76, and later cut the lead to four points after Berry hit a 3-pointer, but that's as close as the Storm would get, as the Savage Storm won the battle of the storms, coming away with a 91-85 victory.
 
Southern Nazarene shot 44.3 percent from the field on 31-of-70 shooting while the Savage Storm shot 50.0 percent on 32-of-64 shooting. Southeastern Oklahoma State out scored the Storm 38-32 in the paint and were able to score 19 points off of the 16 turnovers they forced.
