WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Despite not making a field goal in the final 5:02 of the game, Southern Nazarene holds off Midwestern State in a 70-66 win that snaps a five-game losing streak.
Â
In a game that saw a combined 62 fouls and 94 total free throws, the Crimson Storm (4-5) were able to hold off the Mustangs' (7-3) late push in the fourth quarter. SNU shot just 29 percent from the field, and made just one of their 12 three-point attempts. MSU shot 33 percent from the field, and just 49 percent from the free-throw line.
Â
It was a back and forth game, as there were eight lead changes and 11 ties between the two teams. The Storm went 80 percent from the free-throw line, which proved to be the difference maker. They made 39 of their 49 attempts. They also turned the ball over a season-high 23 times, but also forced 17 turnovers from the Mustangs.
Â
Alexus Jones and
Adrienne Berry each finished the game with 15 points, despite just three made field goals between the two. Jones made all 10 of her free-throw attempts, while Berry made 13-of-14.
Irene Perez scored 14 points and hauled in six rebounds, while
Kennedy Gillette chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds off the SNU bench.
Â
Offense seemed to be in short supply for both teams in the first half, as the score was just 9-9 at the end of the first quarter. It was just a 21-20 lead for Midwestern State going into halftime, before both teams came out firing in the third. Jones scored 10 of her 15 points in the quarter, as SNU outscored MSU 27-21 in the period.
Â
The Mustangs were not going down without in the fourth however, even when Perez gave the Storm its largest lead of the game at 57-44 with 5:02 to play. That would be the last field goal SNU would convert, as Midwestern State went on a 22-12 run to make it a 69-66 game with 20 seconds left. The Mustangs missed the game-tying three-pointer as the Storm held on for the victory.
