Storm Fall to Oklahoma Christian

Eagles hand SNU their first loss of the season

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene committed 21 turnovers and shot just 31 percent from three-point range in a 76-69 loss to Oklahoma Christian Saturday afternoon.

The loss was the first of the season for the Crimson Storm (4-1), as they were coming off a couple of big Great American Conference wins before Thanksgiving. It was the first win of the season for the Eagles (1-4) as they shot 45 percent from the field in game that saw 12 ties and 16 lead changes.

The lead never reached double-digits for either team, as Micah Speight lead the way for SNU with 16 points on 4-of-9 shooting, and 2-of-4 from three point range. He also added seven rebounds and four assists. Noah Starkey notched his first double-double of the season, as he totaled 14 points and 10 rebounds. Jhonathan Dunn added 13 points and six rebounds, while Quaylon Newton and Chris Stephens each chipped in 10 points for Southern Nazarene. SNU shot just under 40 percent from the field in the game, and out-rebounded the Eagles 40-32 for the game. They also made 20 of their 29 free throw attempts in a game that witnessed 45 total fouls.

The Storm opened the game on a 12-4 run but OC responded with a 20-4 run to lead 26-18 midway through the first half. SNU then outscored the Eagles 22-13 to close the half, as they trailed 40-39 heading into break. Southern Nazarene shot 50 percent from the field in the first half, despite giving the ball away 11 times to allow OC to hold the lead.

The second half saw the Storm shoot just 28 percent from the field, but SNU stayed in the game by getting to the free-throw line. They made 12 of their 16 free throw attempts despite going 1-for-9 from 3-point range. Both teams traded the lead eight times in the second half, with the largest lead being just two for either side until the final three minutes of the game.

A layup from Dunn gave Southern Nazarene a 68-66 lead with 2:59 to play, and that was the last field goal the Storm made. Oklahoma Christian went on a 10-1 run to close the game to take the win.
