ADA, Okla. — For the third consecutive game and fifth time in the past six games, Southern Nazarene scored the first runs of the game, only to see that lead disappear and end up on the wrong end of the scoreboard. Today, SNU dropped a doubleheader 6-5 and 14-3 to East Central.
Â
Game one was especially painful for the Crimson Storm (7-29, 5-18 GAC), as they were just one out away from a win, only to see it slip through their fingers. The Tigers scored an unearned run with two outs in the ninth inning to tie the game, then scored another run with two outs in the 12
th inning to walk off with a win.
Â
SNU jumped on the board early with two runs in the top of the first.
Gaige Webster scored on a sacrifice fly by
Mike Descisciolo and was followed by a single from
Tyler Stevens to score
Cody Nelson.
Â
ECU got a run back in the fourth, but the Storm answered with a run in the top of the seventh when
Jefferson Harris scored on a groundout by Descisciolo. The Tigers struck back in the bottom half, though, with three runs to take a 4-3 lead.
Â
The score remained there until the top of the ninth when
Anthony Wiggins ripped a double to center field to score
Austin Cooper and
Derrick Davis and give SNU a 5-4 lead. However, the lead was short lived, as the ECU evened it with the unearned run in the bottom frame then walked off with the win in the 12
th.
Â
Mason Pinion got the start for Southern Nazarene and pitched well for six innings until running into trouble in the seventh. He ended up surrendering four runs on nine hits over six innings without issuing a walk.
Austin Cooper (1-2) took the loss while giving up two runs, one earned, over 5.2 innings while striking out three. Harris, Wiggins, Nelson, and
Shelby Reese led the Storm at the plate during the opener as each recorded three hits.
Â
In the nightcap, SNU started off well once again but couldn't make the lead last. Southern Nazarene got a run in the top of the first when Descisciolo hit another sacrifice fly to score Reese, then added another when Cooper singled to left field to score Stevens.
Â
East Central scored runs in the next two innings to tie the game then SNU added a run in the top of the fourth when Reese singled to score
Josh Matelsky to make it 3-2. ECU then added two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a one-run lead. The Tigers never looked back from there, as they scored a run in the fifth and nine in the sixth inning to blow the game open.
Â
Jacob Spruill (0-8) started game two and surrendered four runs on six hits and four walks while striking out two. Matelsky led the way for the Crimson Storm offense as he went 3-for-4, while Wiggins, Descisciolo, Stevens, and Cooper each added two hits of their own.
