SHAWNEE, Okla. — The late-season struggles continued today for Southern Nazarene, as it's losing streak in Great American Conference play extended to 14 games after losing 3-2 and 9-4 to Oklahoma Baptist.
Â
The Crimson Storm (8-39, 5-27 GAC) held leads in both games, but failed to capitalize in crunch time to pull off wins. OBU got on the board first in game one with a home run in the second inning, but
Anthony Wiggins put the Storm on top 2-1 in the top of the third with a two-run blast, his seventh long ball of the season.
Â
The Bison knotted the score up in the fourth on a fielder's choice, and the score remained 2-2 until the 10
th inning. After
Austin Cooper retired the first two batters of the inning, OBU worked a walk. The Bison then ripped a single to left field, and the winning run ended up coming around to score on the play due to an SNU error.
Â
Mason Pinion got the start for Southern Nazarene, going up against the best offense in the GAC. Pinion was dialed in, going nine innings and giving up just two runs on eight hits while striking out three. Cooper (2-3) took the loss, throwing 0.2 innings of relief and allowing one unearned run while striking out one. Cooper added two hits with a double on the offensive end, while Wiggins,
Shelby Reese, and
Mike Descisciolo all recorded hits in the opener.
Â
The Oklahoma Baptist offense burst open in game two, scoring nine runs on 13 hits. SNU got on the board first with Reese driving in Wiggins in the top of the first. OBU responded with one in the bottom of the frame, but the Crimson Storm took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third when Cooper scored on a groundout by
Tyler Stevens.
Â
The Bison took over from that point on, scoring six runs over then next two innings to take a 7-2 lead. The Storm tried to climb back into the game in the fifth, with Reese singling in
Derrick Davis and Stevens driving in Cooper once again on a sacrifice fly. But Oklahoma Baptist scored two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to ice the game.
Â
Jacob Spruill (0-11) started the nightcap for SNU and went four innings, giving up seven runs, six earned, on nine hits while striking out two.
Dante Archuleta came in relief for Southern Nazarene, giving up two runs over the final two innings.
Â
Cooper was once again the catalyst at the plate for SNU, going 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Stevens and Reese added two RBIs, while Reese and Wiggins had the only other hits for the Crimson Storm.
