SNU Swept By Southeastern

SNU gave up seven home runs as Southeastern finished off a three-game sweep

BETHANY, Okla. — It was a tough day at the ballpark for Southern Nazarene as it dropped a doubleheader to suffer a sweep at the hands of Southeastern Oklahoma State by scores of 13-8 and 6-3.

The Crimson Storm (7-26, 5-16 GAC) started off hot, scoring two runs right out of the gates. Mike Descisciolo drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly, then Tyler Stevens singled up the middle to score Anthony Wiggins and give SNU a 2-0 lead after one inning.

The bats went cold after that for the Storm, as the team went hitless for the next four innings after recording four hits in the opening frame. Southeastern, in the meantime, began chipping away at the SNU lead. The Savage Storm scored a run in the third then tied the game with another run in the fifth.

The dagger came in the sixth inning, as SOSU scored 10 runs during the frame. Ty Hanson was the big hitter for Southeastern as he hit two home runs and drove in seven runs in the sixth inning alone.  To top it all off, seven of the 10 runs in the frame were unearned.

Southern Nazarene tried to make things interesting in the bottom of the seventh. Facing a run-rule loss if they didn't score, the Storm brought home six runs after starting the inning with six consecutive hits. Austin Cooper started the scoring with a single to score Ryan Tucker, then Garrett Perez drove home Cody Nelson two batters later with an infield single.

Following a pitching change, Anthony Wiggins ripped a double down the right field line to bring in Cooper and Gaige Webster. After Perez scored on a wild pitch, Descisciolo recorded his second sacrifice fly of the game to score Wiggins and bring the score to 12-8. SNU ran out of gas after that, as Southeastern drove in another run in the top of the ninth to ice the game.

Jacob Spruill (0-7) got the start for SNU and gave up seven runs, five earned, over 5.1 innings. He allowed 10 hits while walking three and striking out three. Every starter for Southern Nazarene recorded a hit in game one, with Perez, Wiggins, Stevens, and Shelby Reese all having multi-hit games.

In game two, it was Southeastern that set the tone early. The Savage Storm smacked two home runs in the opening frame to establish an early 2-0 lead. SOSU drove in two more runs in the fourth then hit another solo shot in the fifth to push the lead to 5-0.

The Storm started another comeback attempt in the bottom of the fifth, as Descisciolo ripped a two-run triple down the right field line to score Wiggins and Webster to get SNU on the board. Stevens followed suit with a single to right field to score Descisciolo and get SNU within two, but that was as close as they would get. SOSU added another run in the top of the sixth to provide some insurance, then held SNU scoreless over the last two innings to seal the sweep.

Descisciolo (1-1) started on the mound for Southern Nazarene in game two and surrendered five runs over 4.1 innings while striking out three. Webster and Cody Nelson each had multi-hit games in the finale.
