ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — Southern Nazarene dropped both games of a Saturday doubleheader at Henderson State, falling 5-0 in the first game and 11-3 in the second.
Â
The Crimson Storm (25-27, 16-24) had just two hits in the opener before the Reddies (29-33, 20-20 GAC) closed out the series with 12 hits to end it in six innings.
Â
In the opener, two of the Great American Conference's best pitchers went toe-to-toe as
Kayla Wyatt and Michelle Sorensen dueled it out for the second straight day. Sorensen gave up just two hits and struck out seven in the complete-game performance. Wyatt (16-12) had allowed just two runners in scoring position through five innings, but got into a jam in the sixth. After a leadoff walk and a pair of errors led to one HSU run, the Reddies got a grand slam to give them a 5-0 lead and that's all Sorensen needed to close the door.
Â
Wyatt struck out four in 5.1 innings and gave up just three hits.
Ashley Potter threw the final two-thirds without giving up a hit.
Â
In the nightcap, it was the HSU bats and walks that plagued the Storm early. Southern Nazarene gave up two walks and hit three batters as part of a six run inning that included back-to-back home runs. One of those home runs was the second grand slam of the day by Destiny Garza as Henderson took a 6-0 lead in the first.
Â
SNU tried to chip away at the lead with two in the fourth on a
Sam Smith home run and a Syndni Toilolo double, but the Reddies answered with one in the fifth to make it 7-2. After Smith hit her 13
th home run of the year in the fourth, Toilolo followed with her 12
th home run of the year in the sixth to make it 7-3. That was it for SNU though as the Reddies scored four in the bottom of the sixth to pick up the run rule.
Â
Jill Clemence and Toilolo each finished at 2-for-3 with a run scored while Toilolo also had an RBI.
Katelyn Brown (8-13) took the loss after throwing the first two-thirds of the game.
