BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene lost its seventh and eighth consecutive games in Great American Conference play as it dropped a doubleheader 7-4 and 16-6 to Henderson State on senior day.
Â
The Crimson Storm (8-33, 5-21 GAC) fell behind early in game one, but were able to climb back to make it interesting late. HSU scored the first four runs of the game and held a 4-0 lead going into the bottom of the third, then SNU began to chip away when
Jefferson Harris ripped a solo home run to left field to get the Storm on the board.
Â
The score remained 4-1 until the seventh inning, when Harris struck again. After
Austin Cooper and
Shelby Reese worked back-to-back walks with one out, Harris put his second home run of the game off the left field scoreboard to tie the game.
Â
The Reddies bounced back quick to swipe away a victory from SNU with three runs in the top of the eighth, then shut the Storm down over the last two innings to ice the game.
Â
Mason Pinion (0-9) got the start for Southern Nazarene and threw a season-high 7.1 innings while giving up six runs on nine hits while striking out two.
Dante Archuleta and
Connor Berry pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in relief, keeping the Storm within striking distance. Harris carried SNU at the plate, driving in all four Crimson Storm runs with his two homers.
Anthony Wiggins and
Mike Descisciolo each tallied two hits, while Descisciolo added a double.
Â
In game two, the Reddies wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as they scored four runs on four hits in the first. HSU added two more runs in the second on a home run by AJ Kruzel to take a 6-0 lead.
Â
Southern Nazarene tried to mount another comeback in the bottom of the second, as the Storm scored three runs in the frame. Descisciolo led off the inning with a double, then was brought around when
Josh Matelsky ripped a double to get SNU on the board.
Ryan Tucker followed with a single to left field to score Matelsky, then eventually scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-3.
Â
Henderson State scored the next six runs of the game, tacking on four runs in the fourth and two in the fifth. SNU pushed three runs across in the bottom of the fifth, with the first four batters of the inning reaching base. After
Tyler Stevens was hit by a pitch and Wiggins and Descisciolo singled to load the bases, Matelsky singled to score Stevens and Wiggins. Descisciolo later scored on a groundout by Cooper, but that was as close as Southern Nazarene would get. HSU added four runs in the sixth to push the lead to 16-6, where the score remained through the rest of the game.
Â
Jacob Spruill (0-9) started the nightcap for the Storm and surrendered 10 runs on nine hits and four walks. Descisciolo and Matelsky each went 3-for-4 in game two, while Wiggins and Cooper added two hits apiece.
