Tech Sweeps Storm

Southern Nazarene played two tightly contested games against No. 5 Arkansas Tech

BETHANY, Okla. — No. 5 Arkansas Tech took a twin-bill from Southern Nazarene Friday as SNU fell 3-1 in the opener and 6-4 in the second game.

In the first game, Arkansas Tech (18-1, 10-0 GAC) broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth on a solo home run to left center, and added another run on an error to take a 2-0 lead. Hope Martin put the Storm (7-11, 2-8 GAC) on the board in the bottom half of the inning with her first career home run to make it 2-1. The Golden Suns pushed it to 3-1 in the top of the seventh and retired the Storm in order in the bottom half.

Kayla Wyatt (4-4) took the loss after giving up three runs, two earned, on five hits. She struck out a season-high 13 in seven innings of work.

The Golden Suns took the first lead of the second game as well with two in the top of the first inning and then pushed it to 3-0 with one in the top of the fourth. Tech increased its lead to 5-0 in the top of the fourth, but SNU got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a Sam Smith fielder's choice. Southern Nazarene cut it to 5-2 in the fifth on a Hope Martin fielder's choice before the Storm cut the deficit to 5-4 in the sixth on an odd sequence of run downs and one of six Arkansas Tech errors.

The Golden Suns though added one in the top of the seventh to lead 6-4 and closed the door in the bottom half to pick up the win.

Jill Clemence went 2-for-3 while Sam Smith went 2-for-4. Katelyn Brown took the loss after giving up six runs on nine hits, and striking out eight, in seven innings.
