Oh Holy Comebacks

SNU came from behind in both games to sweep a doubleheader from Panhandle State

BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene needed all the help it could get as it overcame deficits in both games to pick up its first nonconference wins and sweep a doubleheader from Oklahoma Panhandle State 6-4 and 14-11.

The Storm (7-23, 5-13 GAC) got on the board first in both games. In the opener, Gaige Webster scored the first run of the game in the first inning on an RBI single from Anthony Wiggins to take a 1-0 lead.

Panhandle State evened the score in the top of the third before taking advantage of two walks and an SNU error to score three runs in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.

Southern Nazarene wasted no time striking back, as the Storm bounced back with five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Wiggins recorded his second RBI of the game as he singled in Austin Cooper before Shelby Reese reached on a fielder's choice to score Webster. Mike Descisciolo then delivered the dagger with a 3-run home run over the left field fence to seal the win.

Wiggins (1-5) got the win on the mound while giving up four runs, just two earned, on two hits while striking out four over five innings of work. Descisciolo pitched two hitless innings of relief while striking out three and recording his first save of the season.

Wiggins went 2-for-4 in game one with two RBIs, while Webster, Descisciolo, and Cooper each recorded one hit.

In the finale, the comeback was even more impressive for the Crimson Storm. SNU scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first when Descisciolo reached on an error and scored Webster.

OPSU then exploded as it scored nine runs over the next three innings to take a commanding 9-1 lead.

SNU began to chip away in the bottom of the fourth. Cooper got the scoring started as he singled in Ryan Tucker, which was followed by double by Webster to score Josh Matelsky. Garrett Perez drove Cooper in with an infield hit, then Wiggins kept his hot day going with a double to score Webster. After Tyler Stevens drove in Perez on a ground out, SNU had narrowed the gap to 9-6.

The Storm added two more in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to two errors by the Aggies. After Tucker and Matelsky reached base to start the inning, a sacrifice bunt attempt by Cooper resulted in a throwing error by the pitcher to bring in Tucker. Three batters later, Wiggins reached on an interference call to bring in Matelsky and get the Storm within one.

Panhandle State tried to deliver the knockout blow in the top of the sixth with a two-run home run, but SNU continued to fight back. The Crimson Storm finished the comeback with six runs in the bottom half of the inning. Cooper got the scoring going once again with an RBI single to score Reese. After Perez was hit by a pitch two batters later to score Matelsky, Wiggins gave Southern Nazarene the lead for good with a double down the left field line to score Webster and Cooper. SNU added insurance later in the inning with a single by Reese and a walk by Tucker to score Perez and Wiggins.

Connor Berry (1-0) got the first win of his career as he recorded the last out of the sixth inning on just two pitches. Cooper recorded his second save of the season as he pitched a scoreless seventh inning.

Wiggins and Cooper each recorded three hits in the nightcap for Southern Nazarene, while Webster, Reese, Tucker, and Matelsky each registered two hits. The bottom half of the SNU lineup was especially potent, as the 6-through-9 hitters combined to go 9-for-16 with eight runs scored and five RBIs.
