Very Good Friday

Southern Nazarene records its first GAC doubleheader sweep with wins over Northwestern Oklahoma State

BETHANY, Okla. — Kayla Wyatt was nearly untouchable as the senior gave up just one hit across 9.2 innings of work in a 1-0, 6-4, doubleheader sweep of Northwestern Oklahoma State Friday.

The Crimson Storm (13-19, 6-16 GAC) scored just one run in the opener and that was all they needed behind Wyatt. The senior struck out 14 of the 25 she faced and gave up just one hit and walked just one in the complete-game shutout. It was her second complete-game shutout of the year. Southern Nazarene scored the only run of the game on a double to left center to by Kyndall Freer-Christopher to score Sydni Toilolo.

Katelyn Brown went 2-for-3 to lead the way for SNU.

In the nightcap, Wyatt (8-6) walked one and struck out two in the final 2.2 innings of work as SNU rallied from being down twice.

The Storm took first lead of the second game when Freer-Christopher laid down a sacrifice squeeze to score Jill Clemence and give SNU a 1-0 lead. The Rangers though answered with three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-1 lead.

SNU tied it in the bottom of the third on a two-run shot to left by Sam Smith for her seventh home run of the year. Northwestern retook the lead at 4-3 in the top of the fifth, but the Storm struck back in the bottom of the sixth as Smith ripped a bases-loaded double to center field to clear the bases and put the Storm up 6-4.

Smith went 3-for-3 with five RBIs and a run scored while Logan Sundbye went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.  Brown got the start as she gave up four runs, one earned, on seven hits. She struck out five in 4.1 innings of work.
