BETHANY, Okla. — Sam Smith entered the day hitting under .300, but after a 6-for-7 performance in a Monday doubleheader, the junior left the field hitting .338 for Southern Nazarene.
Â
Smith went 3-for-3 with three RBIs for the Crimson Storm (8-16, 3-13 GAC) in an 8-3 win over Harding in the first game before going 3-for-4 with a run scored in a 10-4 loss to the Bisons (19-9, 11-5 GAC) in the nightcap.
Â
In the opener, Harding took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on a wild pitch and a two-run home run. The Storm answered back in the top of the fourth with six runs to take a 6-3 lead. The first two scored on an
Emily Idler bases-loaded single up the middle before Smith laced a single to right to score the next two. For Idler, it was her first career hit.
Â
Right before the Storm scored the final two runs of the inning,
Sydni Toilolo fouled a pitch off into the SNU dugout which hit
Emily Idler in the face. Idler left the field under her own power and was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.
Â
Just a couple of pitches later, Toilolo launched her seventh home run of the year to put the Storm on top 6-3. SNU added two more insurance runs in the top of the fifth on a pair of singles by
Kriston Shumaker and Smith to make it 8-3.
Â
Hope Martin went 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
Kyndall Freer-Christopher also went 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Â
Kayla Wyatt (5-6) picked up the win after striking out 10 in seven innings of work. She gave up just three runs on five hits in the complete game performance.
Â
In the nightcap, the Bisons erupted for four runs in the bottom of the second and added another in the third to take a 5-0 lead. SNU got one back in the top of the fourth when
Hannah LeBeau hit her fourth home run of the year with a solo shot to left center to make it 5-1.
Â
The Storm pushed two more runs across in the top of fifth on a
Jill Clemence fielder's choice and a Toilolo sacrifice squeeze to cut it to 5-3. SNU tacked on one more in the sixth when Freer-Christopher doubled to right center to score
Cheyenne Reynolds to make it 5-4.
Â
The Bisons though got three home runs and scored five runs total in the bottom of the sixth to take a 10-4 advantage.
Â
Freer-Christopher also went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Katelyn Brown (3-8) took the loss after giving up five runs, four earned, on nine hits.Â
