SNU earned its first series win of the season

BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene picked up its first series win since last February as SNU came from behind in both games to sweep a doubleheader from Harding by scores of 10-9 and 7-6.

The Crimson Storm (4-17, 4-8 GAC) fell in an early hole in game one as the Bisons scored the first eight runs of the game. Harding scored three runs in the top of the first, all unearned, before scoring another four in the second. Another run in the top of the sixth made the game 8-0, with seven of the eight runs coming on home runs.

SNU began the comeback with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. After Cody Nelson reached on an error to score Anthony Wiggins, Josh Matelsky drove in Tyler Stevens with an RBI single. Gaige Webster followed with a sacrifice fly to score Ryan Tucker then Dillon Feland reached on an error to score Nelson.

Great effort from the SNU bullpen held the score at 8-4 heading into the ninth inning. After Feland and Garrett Perez singled to begin the bottom of the ninth, Anthony Wiggins belted his fifth home run of the season to make it a one-run game. Stevens followed suit with his first long ball of the year to tie the game at 8-8.

After Harding scored a run in the top of the 12th, Mike Descisciolo pulled Southern Nazarene even once again with his third home run of the season. After Descisciolo pitched a scoreless top half of the 13th, Wiggins struck once again with his second home run of the game to give SNU a 10-9 victory.

Descisciolo (1-0) picked up the win on the mound as he went four innings in relief and gave up just one run while striking out four. Cody Tolbert, Dante Archuleta, Cameron Ray, and Austin Cooper each pitched strong out of the pen, combining to throw 7.1 innings of relief and give up just one run while striking out four and walking just one batter.

In game two, Harding jumped out to another early lead. The Bisons scored runs in both the first and second innings and held a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Storm bats woke up in the fifth, as SNU scored all seven runs in the frame. Brady VanZant got the Storm on the board with an RBI single to score Webster, then Stevens grounded out to score Feland. Descisciolo and Shelby Reese delivered the big blows as both hit home runs during the frame to take a 7-2 lead.

Harding tried to make things interesting in the top of the seventh. The Bisons scored four runs and had the tying run at second base with one out. Cooper then came in for the third time in the series and forced a groundout before striking out the final batter of the game to seal the series win and earn his first save of the season.

Tolbert (1-1) picked up the win in game two as he pitched 1.2 innings in relief and struck out one. Connor Gaughan started for the Storm and surrendered just two runs over 4.2 innings while striking out three.

SNU hit six home runs on the day, with Wiggins and Descisciolo hitting two each. Wiggins went 4-for-10 on the day with four runs and four RBIs, while Descisciolo went 4-for-9 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Seven Southern Nazarene hitters recorded multiple hits in game one, while four had multi-hit games in the finale.
