Saturday Split on the Shore

Storm knock off Rockhurst, Fall to Missouri-St. Louis

GULF SHORES, Ala. — Southern Nazarene will come away from its season opening weekend 2-2 after the Crimson Storm split its final two games Saturday at the Gulf Coast Invitational.
 
SNU got a one-hitter out of Kayla Wyatt (1-0) in a 4-0 win over Rockhurst before the Storm fell 6-3 to No. 7 Missouri-St. Louis.
 
In the opener, Wyatt struck out eight and walked just one. Kriston Shumaker went 2-for-3 with a run scored while Sydni Toilolo went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. SNU scored first in the top of the first on a Jill Clemence ground out that scored Shumaker. The Storm went up 2-0 in the fourth on a Kyndall Freer-Christopher single to right to score Kendal Stockstill. Toilolo drove home the final two runs of the game when she doubled to left to score Katelyn Brown and Clemence.
 
In the nightcap, UMSL's Hannah Perryman allowed just one baserunner with a walk through the first five innings. The Division II Player of the Year candidate had eight strikeouts and had a 2-0 lead heading into the top of the sixth.
 
The Crimson Storm started to get life when Sam Smith ripped a solo home run to put SNU on the board. The Tritons though scored four in the bottom half of the inning to take a 6-1 lead. The Storm didn't go away and led the seventh of with back-to-back hits. Clemence led off the inning with an infield single before Toilolo ripped her first home run of the year to make it 6-3. Perryman though retired the next three batters to secure the win.
 
Katelyn Brown (1-1) took the loss after giving up four runs, two earned, on three hits in five innings of work. Smith, Clemence and Toilolo had all three hits for the Storm.
