BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene picked up another win Saturday as it scored a series split with Southern Arkansas in a 4-3 win the first game of a doubleheader before falling 12-1 in the second game.
Â
The Crimson Storm (7-9, 2-6 GAC) held one of the hottest hitting teams in the Great American Conference to just four hits, in the opener, and out hit the Muleriders (14-2, 6-2 GAC) for the third straight game.
Â
Southern Arkansas took the first lead of the game with a leadoff home run, but Southern Nazarene answered in the bottom of the first when
Jill Clemence roped a two-out, bases-loaded single to left center to push two across the plate.
Sam Smith made it 3-1 in the bottom of the second when she hit her fifth home run of the year with a solo shot to center field.
Â
The Muleriders cut it to 3-2 in the top of the third and then tied it in the top of the fourth. SNU took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth when the Storm took advantage of an SAU error to lead 4-3 and that was enough for
Kayla Wyatt.
Â
The senior moved to 4-3 on the year after she gave up just three runs on four hits and struck out nine in seven innings of work. All five hits for the Storm came from different players.
Â
In the second game, Southern Arkansas took the first lead of the game with one in the second and took a 2-0 lead in in the third. The Muleriders opened up the game in the top of the fourth with four runs to lead 6-0. The Storm got one back in the bottom of the fourth on a one-out single down the left field line by
Jill Clemence to cut the lead to 6-1. That was as close as the Storm came as SAU put it away with six in the fifth to score the win.
Â
Ashley Potter (0-1) took the loss after giving up five runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings of work.
Â
Hannah LeBeau had two of SNU's four hits as she went 2-for-2.
