Blossoms Sweep Storm

SNU drops both games of a GAC doubleheader by one run

MONTICELLO, Ark. — Southern Nazarene came up on the wrong side of two one-run losses in the Great American Conference season opening weekend. SNU fell 3-2 and 4-3 to Arkansas-Monticello in a Friday doubleheader.

Kayla Wyatt (2-2) gave up just three runs on three hits and struck out 10 in the opener, but two of those hits were home runs. The Cotton Blossoms struck first in the bottom of the third with a two-out solo shot to left. SNU responded though with a two-run shot to left by Sam Smith to give the Storm a 2-1 lead in top of the fourth.

UAM though responded in the bottom of the fifth though with a two-run home run of its own in the bottom of the fifth to lead 3-2 and then set the Storm down in order in the sixth and seventh for the win.

In the nightcap, the Blossoms opened the first with a run and then added three more in the fifth to lead 4-0. The Storm finally got the bats going in the top of the sixth when Logan Sundbye hit a sacrifice fly to score Cheyenne Reynolds. Sydni Toilolo then ripped her fourth home run of the year when she belted a two-run shot to center field to cut it to 4-3.

Katelyn Brown (3-2) took the loss after giving up four runs on four hits and struck out three in six innings of work.

That was as close as the Storm came though as UAM retired the Storm in order in the seventh for the doubleheader sweep. SNU falls to 5-5 overall and 0-2 in the GAC.
