SNU walks off to a 5-4 win over Arkansas-Monticello

BETHANY, Okla. — For the second consecutive season, Southern Nazarene used a late-game comeback in its Great American Conference opener to earn a victory over Arkansas-Monticello. SNU scored four runs in the final two innings, capped by a walk-off single by Dillon Feland to notch a 5-4 win over the Boll Weevils.

Arkansas-Monticello jumped on top early as it scored a run on a sacrifice fly in the top of the second inning. The Crimson Storm (1-9, 1-0 GAC) immediately struck back in the bottom half, as Shelby Reese scored on a double play to tie the game 1-1.

The Boll Weevils fought back the next inning. Taking advantage of three consecutive walks by Jacob Spruill to start the inning, UAM scored three runs in the frame to make it a 4-1 game.

Spruill settled in after that inning, pitching four consecutive scoreless frames to keep the Boll Weevils within striking distance. After Austin Cooper worked a 1-2-3 top of the eighth, the Crimson Storm scored three runs in the bottom half. Gaige Webster began the inning with a bunt hit, which was followed by a walk by Feland. Cody Nelson drove the two in with a one-out double, then was driven in by Reese to tie the game.

UAM retired the first batter of the ninth inning, then Brady VanZant was hit by a pitch with one out. Two batters later, Dillon Feland delivered a line drive over the center fielder's head to bring VanZant around to win the game.

Spruill finished giving up four runs on five hits through seven innings of work. He also matched a career-high with six strikeouts. Cooper (1-1) picked up the win as he worked two innings of relief without giving up a baserunner and striking out one.

Feland led Southern Nazarene at the dish as he went 2-for-3 with two walks and a stolen base. Reese and Ryan Tucker each went 2-for-4, while Nelson went 1-for-4 and drove in two for the Crimson Storm.
