Southern Nazarene splits opening day of UAM

BENTONVILLE, Ark. — Southern Nazarene got a one-hitter in a 7-0 win over Missouri S&T and fell 4-2 to Northwest Missouri State in the opening day of the UAM 8-State Classic.

Katelyn Brown (2-1) struck out a season-high eight and gave up just one hit in seven innings of work in the win over MST. The Crimson Storm (3-3) also scored a season-high seven run on seven hits. Junior Logan Sundbye went 2-for-2 on the day with an RBI to lead the way.

SNU struck first in the top of the third on a Sundbye single to short to give the Storm a 1-0 lead. Hannah LeBeau made it 3-0 when she drilled a two-run home run to right center in fourth. SNU added two more in the inning with one coming on a Miners' error and the other on a double steal to make it 5-0.

The final two runs came in the sixth as Sam Smith scored on a Sundbye steal attempt at second before Kyndall Freer-Christopher drove in the final run with a double to right center.

In the nightcap, SNU out hit Northwest Missouri State, but the Bearcats took advantage of all three of their hits and one Storm error.

Hope Martin scored the first run of the game as she touched home on a wild pitch in the second, but Northwest Missouri tied it in the top of the fourth on a solo shot to left field. The Bearcats took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on an SNU error, but the Storm answered right back in the bottom half of the inning on a Sundbye single up the middle to tie it at 2-2. NWMSU though scored two in the top of the sixth to put it away.
