Aggies Spoil Home Opener

Cameron ruins opening of Feland Field while sweeping doubleheader of SNU

BETHANY, Okla. — With a grandstand full of fans and a brand new stadium full of excitement, Southern Nazarene was unable to notch its first victory of the season as it dropped a double header to Cameron 7-1 and 13-4.

The Crimson Storm (0-6) managed just two hits in the first game on the newly renovated Feland Field. SNU didn't get its first hit of the game until the fifth inning, when Mike Descisciolo ripped a two-out single to center field. Tyler Stevens was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning, and scored on the play for Southern Nazarene's only run of the game. Stevens singled to start the seventh inning for SNU's only other hit during the game.

Jacob Spruill (0-2) started the home opener for the Crimson Storm and allowed three runs, two earned, with two strikeouts in 5.1 innings. Walks and errors cost Southern Nazarene as it walked six batters and committed three errors in the opener, which led to three unearned runs.

In the finale, things didn't get much easier for SNU. After Cameron jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings, the Crimson Storm scored two runs in the third. Gaige Webster recorded an RBI single to score Dalen Edgar, then stole second base and scored on two consecutive wild pitches to get within one.

However, the wheels came off in the fourth. The Aggies batted around during the inning and at one point recorded five consecutive base hits. Cameron scored seven runs in the frame on five hits, three hit batters, and one walk to make it a 10-2 game.

Southern Nazarene tried to climb back into the game in the bottom half of the inning as Descisciolo and Teel ripped RBI doubles to make it 10-4. However, the Crimson Storm didn't score the rest of the game and the Aggies added three runs in the ninth to seal the game.

Austin Cooper (0-1) got the start in the finale and gave up nine runs, seven earned, on nine hits and three walks in 3.1 innings. Connor Gaughan pitched well in relief as he went 5.2 innings out of the bullpen and gave up three runs, all of which came on a two-out home run in the ninth inning. Gaughan gave up just four hits and did not walk a batter while striking out five.
