BETHANY, Okla.— Southern Nazarene got a career high 34 points from
Abby Boyd, but it wasn't enough to hold off Arkansas Tech as the Storm fell 89-86 Saturday afternoon.
Boyd and
Adrienne Berry combined for 52 points and eight rebounds for the Crimson Storm (2-4, 0-3 GAC). Boyd scored a career high 34 points and added six rebounds, and three assists. She went 9-for-16 from the field and 5-for-6 from beyond the arc. She was also 11-for-12 from the free-throw line. Berry had 18 points and two rebounds as she went 7-of-15 from the floor, 3-for-8 from beyond the arc, and 1-for-2 from the line.
Arkansas Tech got off to a hot start as they opened the game on a 16-4 run, riding 11 points from Cheyenne North. The Storm started 1-for-7 from the field, but ended the quarter on a 15-8 run as SNU shot a perfect 8-for-8 to end the quarter, putting the score at 24-19 going into the second quarter.
The Golden Suns pushed their lead to 28-21 with 9:25 remaining in the second quarter after Danielle Frachiseur hit a jumper. The Storm would respond by going on a 11-5 run capped by an
Abby Boyd 3-pointer, putting the score at 33-32, which the closest SNU would get for the remainder of the half as the Golden Suns finished the quarter on a 13-5 run to put the score at 46-37 at half.
Southern Nazarene shot 57.1 percent on 12-of-21 shooting and 50.0 percent from behind the arc on 4-8 shooting. Arkansas Tech shot 51.4 percent on 18-35 shooting and 40 .0 percent from 3-point range on 2-of-5 shooting. Despite turning the ball over 17 times in the first half, the Storm only found themselves trailing by nine with two quarters yet to play. Berry led all SNU scorers with ten points, she also added two assists.
The Storm were able to pull within six points after Boyd drilled a 3-pointer to put the score at 48-42. That's as close as they would get in the third quarter as the Golden Suns built a 14-point lead with 2:22 remaining in the quarter. SNU was able to close the gap to 10 after
Danielle Gaddis hit a layup to put the score at 69-59 at the end of the third quarter.
SNU started the fourth quarter on a 11-4 run highlighted by a Boyd layup to bring the Storm within three at 73-70. After a Golden Sun basket, Southern Nazarene took the lead for the first time in the game after Boyd drained two 3-pointers. The Golden Suns retook the lead at 78-76 after North hit a 3-point shot with 3:17 remaining in regulation. The Storm retook the lead at 79-78 and extended the lead to 81-78 after Boyd hit a jumper. ATU responded by hitting another 3-pointer too tie the game at 81-81 with 2:10 remaining. SNU retook the lead one last time after Berry drained a 3-pointer to put the score at 84-81 with 1:57 remaining. However, Arkansas Tech controlled the final 1:57 as they closed the game on a 8-2 run to come away with a 89-86 win.
Southern Nazarene finished the game shooting 48.2 percent from the field on 27-of-56 shooting. SNU shot 50.0 percent from behind the arc as they made 9-of-18 3-pointers. The Storm also shot 88.5 percent from the line as they made 23-26 free throws. Arkansas Tech shot 47.1 percent on 33-70 shooting, while shooting 42.1 percent from 3-point range on 7-17 shooting.
The Storm out rebounded ATU 38-29, but turned the ball over 21 times, which led to 21 Golden Sun points.
