Southern Nazarene gave up late leads in each game of a doubleheader loss

RUSSELLVILLE, Okla. — Southern Nazarene looked to be in control of two different games through five innings, but Arkansas Tech scored late runs in each game of a doubleheader to pick up a 7-5, 5-4 sweep Sunday.

The Crimson Storm close the regular season at 19-27 overall and 15-20 in the Great American Conference. That leaves SNU with the sixth seed and will play Southeastern Oklahoma State Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Tiger Athletic Complex on the campus of Bentonville (Ark.) High School.

In the opener, Kylie Lang went 2-for-4 with a run scored in the opener while Kylie Palmer went 2-for-2 with a run scored.

Arkansas Tech took a 3-0 lead with one in the second and two in the fourth, before the Crimson Storm erupted for five runs in the top of the fifth. Lang drove in the first run of the inning with a single through the right side before Jill Clemence tripled down the right field line with the bases loaded and that gave SNU a 4-3 lead. Brown drove in the final run of the inning when she singled down the left field line to put Southern Nazarene up 5-3.

The Golden Suns though scored four in the bottom of the sixth to lead 7-5 and held the Storm scoreless in the seventh.

Kayla Wyatt took the loss as she gave up seven runs on seven hits in six innings of work.

In the nightcap, SNU broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third with three runs. Padilla doubled to right to score Lang before Brown singled through the right side to score Clemence. Jessica Thompson then grounded out to second to score the final run of the inning.

Arkansas Tech didn't get on the board until the bottom of the sixth as Katelyn Brown and Ashley Potter combined for just one run on three hits through the first five innings. Brown got the start and went the first two and gave up just one hit and Potter came on in relief for the next three innings and gave up just one run on two hits.

After the Suns cut the score to 3-1 in the sixth, SNU added another run in the top of the seventh on a LeBeau fielder's choice to make it 4-1. That's when the flood gates opened though for Tech. It started with three straight base hits that loaded the bases before a fourth straight hit and an SNU error scored two to make it 4-3. Tech then notched its fifth straight hit to tie the game at 4-4. After an intentionally walk loaded the bases, the Storm finally got an out, but in the next at bat the Suns got their sixth hit of the inning to push the winning run across the plate.

Wyatt (9-14) took the loss after giving up four runs on seven hits in 1.1 innings of work.

Padilla led the way offensively for SNU as she went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
