MAGNOLIA, Ark. — Coming off finding out that it had clinched a spot in the GAC Championships the day before, Southern Nazarene lost a pair of one-run games to Southern Arkansas as it fell 1-0 in the first game and 4-3 game in the second.
Â
The Muleriders broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the second to lead 1-0 and that was all Abby Weaver needed as she shutout the Storm and gave up just four hits and walked one.
Kayla Wyatt, who moved to 8-11, was nearly as effective as the junior gave up just one run on five hits and struck out seven, but walked six, in six innings of work. All four of SNU's hits came from different players.
Â
In the nightcap, it stayed scoreless until the top of the fifth, when
Melissa Padilla doubled to right center to score
Kylie Lang to put the Storm up 1-0.
Sam Smith then singled through the left side to give SNU a 2-0 lead. The Storm added another run in the top of the sixth when
Jill Clemence singled to right field to score
Alyssa Hughes.
Â
Southern Arkansas though scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth and shut the Storm out in the top of the seventh to get the come-from-behind win.
Â
Katelyn Brown got the start and had not given up a run through five innings, but got into a jam in the sixth. The Muleriders got three straight singles to load the bases before Wyatt came on in relief. A wild pitch made it 3-1 before a two-run single tied it. A two-out single then gave SAU the lead and SNU put just one runner on base in the seventh.
Â
Brown went five innings total and allowed three runs on seven hits and struck out three. Wyatt took the loss and fell to 8-12 as she allowed one run on two hits in the final inning of work.
Â
Clemence and
Hannah LeBeau combined for five of SNU's 10 hits. Clemence went 3-for-4 with an RBI while LeBeau went 2-for-4.
Â
SNU moved to 17-26 overall and 13-18 in the Great American Conference.Â
