Sweeping Through the Blossoms

Southern Nazarene picked up a doubleheader sweep of Arkansas-Monticello

BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene recorded its second straight Friday sweep in a Great American Conference series with a pair of wins over Arkansas-Monticello.

The Crimson Storm (16-21, 12-13 GAC) have won five of their last six games in GAC play and jumped two spots in the conference standings to sixth. SNU will have a chance for its first conference sweep of the year if it can take both games Saturday. SNU won the first game 4-3, by scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh and then had 21 hits in a 14-10 win.

In the opener, The Crimson Storm put the first run on the board when Sydni Toilolo laid down a sacrifice squeeze to score Kylie Lang to put SNU on top 1-0 through the first. The Storm tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth when Katelyn Brown singled up the middle to score Sam Smith from second.

The Cotton Blossoms took the lead in the top of the fifth with three runs to lead 3-2, but SNU waited until it's last out in the seventh to make a move. After Clemence ripped a one-out double down the right field line, Melissa Padilla laced a double over the right fielder's head to score Clemence from second.  Jessica Thompson then delivered the game-winning hit when she blooped a single down the right field line to score Alyssa Hughes, who was pinch running for Padilla, and give the Storm the win.

Brown went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Clemence and Padilla each went 2-for-4. Kayla Wyatt (7-9) picked up the win as she gave up three runs on six hits in the complete-game outing. She also struck out 10 to mark her fifth time to hit double digits in strikeouts.

The Cotton Blossoms took the first lead of the nightcap with a solo shot in the top of the first, but SNU opened the bottom of the first with four straight singles to take a 2-1 lead. Kyndall Free-Christopher made it 3-1 when she blooped in a single the bases loaded. Hannah LeBeau drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 4-1 before Sam Smith had a two-run single to make it 6-1. SNU pushed the final run of the inning across on a UAM error.

Monticello cut it to 7-4 with three in the top of the third, but the Storm got one back when Sam Smith roped a single past UAM's third baseman and drove home Brown and put SNU up 8-4. The Blossoms jumped out in front in the top of the fifth with a pair of home runs as a part of a 5-run inning to take a 9-8 lead.

The Storm took advantage of a UAM error to tie it at 9-9 before Clemence singled up the middle to push two more across for an 11-9 lead. Padilla followed Clemence with another single up the middle to make it 12-9. Thompson made it three straight singles up the middle and pushed it to 13-9.

The Blossoms fired back with a solo shot to lead off the sixth and cut it to 13-10.  The Storm added one more insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Clemence singled through the right side to lead 14-10 and Wyatt closed the door from there.

Ashley Potter (1-1) picked up her first win of the year as she went just a third of an inning and allowed two runs on two hits. Wyatt recorded her fourth save of the year as she tossed the final two innings without allowing a hit and struck out five of the six batters she faced.

SNU had two players go a perfect 5-for-5 in the game as Smith had three RBIs and three runs scored while Clemence also drove in three runs and scored two. Thompson went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored while Padilla went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Freer-Christopher also went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
