Storm Split with Rangers

Wyatt ties career-high in strikeouts in split with Northwestern

ALVA, Okla. — Southern Nazarene's Kayla Wyatt matched her career-best for strikeouts with 14 in the first game of a doubleheader as SNU shutout Northwestern Oklahoma State 5-0 in the first game. The Crimson Storm fell 5-4 in the second.

The Storm broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth when Jill Clemence doubled to left field to score Kylie Palmer and Katelyn Fischer. Melissa Padilla then drove home two more runs with a single to center to score Clemence and Kylie Langer. Sydni Toilolo made it a 5-0 game in the top of the sixth when she hit her first home run of the year on a solo shot to left.

That's all Kayla Wyatt (3-2) needed as the junior was just a hit and a walk away from a perfect game. She tied her career for strikeouts as she fanned 14 of the 22 batters she faced. The Storm had 11 hits on the day and 10 of those hits came from four players. Clemence and Padilla both went 3-for-4. Lang went 2-for-4 while Toilolo went 2-for-3.

Northwestern took the lead in the nightcap as the Rangers scored three in the top of the first and two in the second to lead 5-0.

The Storm battled back though with a run each in the fourth and fifth innings to cut it to 5-2. Lang score the first run off a Padilla ground out before Fischer scored on a Katelyn Brown double down the right field line. SNU brought it to within one on a Ranger error, but SNU was left a run short as Northwestern just held off the Storm.

Brown led the way for SNU going 2-for-3, but also took the loss in the circle to go to 4-5 on the year. She allowed five runs, four earned, in three inning of work. She also struck out three. Ashley Pott gave 2.1 innings of scoreless relief as she gave up just five hits.

SNU moves to 7-7 overall and 4-2 in the Great American Conference.
