Wichita Split

Storm split doubleheader at Newman

WICHITA, Kan. — After getting shutout in the opener 7-0, Southern Nazarene answered with a 3-1 win over Newman Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader.

In the opener, the Crimson Storm (8-10) offense was held to just four hits while Newman had 10. All four hits for SNU came from different players and three of those came on pinch hits. Kayla Wyatt and Katelyn Brown each pitched three innings as Wyatt gave up five runs on five hits whiel walking five and striking out four. Brown gave up two runs, one earned, on five hits and struck out two.

The Storm responded in the nightcap with seven hits and held the Jets to just three. All seven hits for SNU came from different players and Brown (5-6) had a fantastic outing followed by Wyatt's third save of the year. Brown gave up just one run on three hits and fanned six in 5.2 innings of work. She also walked just two. Wyatt threw the final 1.1 innings and didn't allow a hit while striking out three of the six batters she faced.

The Jets did get on the board first with one in the bottom of the second, but SNU got one in the fourth and fifth to lead 2-1. The Storm tied it when Melissa Padilla belted her fourth home run of the season with a lead off shot to center. SNU took the lead in the fifth on a Newman error.

Southern Nazarene added an insurance run in the seventh on another Newman error and that was enough distance for Wyatt to shut the door.
