Tech Tackles Storm

Arkansas Tech too much for Southern Nazarene on the road

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — Southern Nazarene committed 18 turnovers and surrendered 31 points off turnovers in a 90-63 loss at the hands of Arkansas Tech. After dropping a game at Harding Thursday night, SNU wrapped up arguably its toughest road trip of the season. The Golden Suns and Bisons were picked to finish first and second, respectively, in the Great American Conference this season.

The Crimson Storm (2-3, 1-3 GAC) started the game strong, jumping out to a 7-3 lead thanks to five quick points from Abby Boyd. However, the Golden Suns responded by finishing the quarter on a 22-8 run, including 11 consecutive points over a three-minute span.

Arkansas Tech distanced itself even further in the second quarter, taking a 52-34 lead into the intermission. Boyd led the Crimson Storm at the half with 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting. While SNU shot 42.9 percent from the field in the first half, it was unable to string together enough stops to mount a comeback. The Golden Suns lit up the nets in the first half, shooting 51.4 percent from the field and 57.1 percent from 3-point range.

Southern Nazarene did not have much more success in the second half, as Arkansas Tech jumped out on a 13-2 run out of the locker room to essentially ice the game. The Crimson Storm brought the game closer in the final period, outscoring the Golden Suns 17-10 in the fourth quarter.

Boyd led Southern Nazarene in scoring on the night with 17 points, adding two rebounds and two assists as well. Rachel Doerneman added a career-high 14 points while hauling in three rebounds. The Crimson Storm shot 39 percent from the field and 32 percent from 3-point range, while the Golden Suns finished the game shooting 48 percent from the field and 45 percent from beyond the arc.
