Storm Tame the Mustangs

Southern Nazarene forced 21 turnovers in a 68-56 victory over Midwestern State

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Southern Nazarene registered four players in double figures scoring Tuesday night as it picked up its second consecutive victory with a 68-56 win over Midwestern State.
 
The Crimson Storm (2-1) flexed their muscle on the defensive end of the court as they forced the Mustangs into 21 turnovers on the night. SNU recorded 25 points off MSU turnovers, while only committing 13 turnovers of their own. Midwestern State, who was picked to finish third in the Lone Star Conference this season, shot just 37.7 percent from the field. On the other hand, Southern Nazarene shot 44.6 percent from the field, including 51.9 percent in the first half.
 
SNU stormed out of the gates, scoring the first seven points of the game and starting play with an 11-2 run. Abby Boyd hit a 3-pointer for the first points of the game after recording a steal on the defensive end. Boyd hit two more shots from long range before the end of the period, along with eight points from Danielle Gaddis, to form a 21-11 lead by the end of the first quarter.
 
Southern Nazarene built onto its lead in the second quarter, taking a 33-22 lead into the locker room. Boyd led SNU at the half with 13 points to go with two assists, while Gaddis chipped in 10 points and four rebounds.
 
The Crimson Storm blew the game open in the second half as they ended the third quarter on an 11-3 run. The Mustangs tried to bring the game close toward the end as they scored 24 points in the final period, but it was too little too late as SNU held on for a 12-point victory.
 
Boyd led the Crimson Storm in scoring on the night with 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting and added four rebounds and five assists. Gaddis added 16 points and eight rebounds, while Rachel Doerneman and Kandyce Freeman chipped in 10 points each. Freeman added a team-high nine rebounds while Doerneman recorded seven of her own.
