Aces Wild

SNU serves 11 aces in a five-set thriller at East Central

ADA, Okla. — Southern Nazarene was well on its way to its second straight 3-0 sweep, but East Central didn't let SNU get out of Ada without making it quite interesting.
 
The Storm (7-10, 3-2) held on for a 3-2 (25-13, 25-17, 31-33, 21-25, 15-13) win as SNU scored its first victory in a 5-set match this year.
 
Kaitlyn Vought notched her second double-double of the season with 12 kills and 13 digs to go along with three blocks. McKayla Benner recorded a career-high six blocks, as SNU as a team had 10, and she had 10 kills as well. McKenna Qualls recorded her third straight match with at least one ace as the junior had two on the night. She also added 11 kills eight digs and two blocks. Courtney Bowie also had 10 kills on the night with three blocks.
 
Elyse Berlin recorded her team-high eighth double-double as the sophomore was just two assists shy of her career-high with 45 and had 13 digs. She also served a career-high three aces. Hannah Davis also served a career-high five aces as the Storm as a team had the most aces against a Great American Conference opponent this season. Davis also had 10 digs. Abbey Bell had a team-high 25 digs and an ace as well.
 
The Storm ripped a .429 clip (13-1-28) in the first set and a .357 (12-2-28) in the second set as SNU looked to be cruising. The Tigers though held the Storm to a .095 and .000 percentage in the third and fourth sets. The third set saw 13 ties and nine lead changes. SNU had two match points in the set and were up 30-29, but the Tigers answered with a 4-1 run to force a fourth set. The Storm led 7-0 in the fourth, but ECU went on a 12-5 run to take a lead that it never gave back to force the final set.
 
SNU again jumped out to an early lead at 9-6, but the Tigers responded with a 5-1 run to lead 11-10. A Qualls kill though sparked a 5-2 run to close out the match and give the Storm their second straight win.
