SNU splits first two matches of the year

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN ANTONIO, Texas — What started out as a rough day, ended on a high note as Southern Nazarene bounced back from a 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-17) sweep from Lubbock Christian with a 3-2 (25-18, 15-25, 25-18, 20-25, 15-11) win over St. Mary's at the Hilltopper Classic.
 
Against Lubbock Christian, Taylor Jacobs led the way with 12 kills and hit .357. She also had a pair of aces, and four digs. Emily Dick had five kills, nine digs and three blocks. Emily Crawford also had five kills. Kaylee Piatt had 23 assists and three aces to go with eight digs.
 
The Storm hit just .155 (30-14-103) and got out dug 57-45.
 
The Lady Chaps didn't trail in the first set until Emily Dick sparked a run for the Storm as SNU scored four straight and took its first lead of the game at 17-15. The Crimson Storm led 18-16 when LCU went on a 4-0 run to lead 20-18 and forced an SNU timeout. The Lady Chaps took their biggest lead of the set at 24-19 and had set point, but SNU responded with three straight to cut it to 24-22. Lubbock Christian though put it away to take the opening set 25-22.
 
In the second set, SNU raced out to a 4-1 lead, but LCU scored four straight to lead 5-4 and never trailed from that point on to lead 2-0 in the match. The Lady Chaps put it away in the final set after using a 5-1 run early to cruise from there.
 
In the bounce-back game against the Rattlers, Jacobs and Crawford combined for 25 kills as Jacobs had 14 and Crawford had 11. Jacobs also had five blocks. Courtney Bowie had nine and Piatt had eight. Piatt also had a season-high 48 assists to go with a team-high three aces and 15 digs for the first double-double of the season. Abbey Bell posted a season-high 18 digs as the Storm had 80 as a team. Elyse Berlin added 14 digs while Dani Chase had 13. Dick added five blocks as well.
 
The Storm had 10 blocks on the night and was able to overcome a .186 (59-27-172) hitting percentage.
 
SNU rallied from being down 9-3 in the first set with a 13-3 run to lead 16-12. After Dick and Bowie capped the run with a block, St. Mary's eventuall tied it at 17-17, but Crawford ignited an 8-1 run to end the set. The Storm hit just .026 in the second set as the Rattlers tied it at 1-1. SNU answered though with a .429 clip (16-1-35) in the third set. Dick had six kills and two blocks in the third set as the Storm rallied from being down 15-12. It was a kill by Dick that set SNU on a 10-0 run and that was more than enough breathing room to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
 
St. Mary's answered back to take the fourth set and set the stage for the fifth and final set. SNU trailed 9-8 in the fifth set when two errors by the Rattlers started a 7-2 run by the Storm to close out the match.
 
The Crimson Storm now get set to wrap up the Hilltopper Classic Saturday at 2 p.m. against Texas Permian-Basin.
