Storm Split Season Opener

Southern Nazarene split a Friday doubleheader to start the 2013 season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WICHITA FALLS, Texas — Southern Nazarene University opened the 2013 season with its first season-opening five-set match since 2009. Unfortunately for SNU the result was the same as the Crimson Storm fell 3-2 (25-27, 25-20, 25-15, 19-25, 15-12) to New Mexico Highlands before sweeping Eastern New Mexico, 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-14) to end the day.
 
The Crimson Storm (1-1) got a team high 16 kills out of Taylor Jacobs, along with five digs, in the loss to NMHU. SNU hit just .133 and had 12 service errors. Kira Roberts had 13 kills while Kaylee Piatt had a match-high 42 assists. Sheridan Steele served a career-high four aces for SNU as the Storm had six as a team.
 
Abbey Bell posted 17 digs while Jamie Hope and Emily Dick each had a game-high three blocks.
 
SNU bounced back in the second game of the night and got a double-double out of Jacobs who had a game-high 14 kills and 10 digs while hitting .357. She also had two aces and five blocks. SNU as a team hit .270 (35-8-100) and served five aces. The Storm also got 10 team blocks as Emilee Crawford got a career-high six blocks to go with her eight kills. The junior also hit .368. Piatt and Taylor Chase split setting duties as Piatt dished out 19 assists while Chase had 11. Bell posted 14 digs. Hope also had five blocks.
 
SNU held Eastern New Mexico to a -.035 clip (27-31-115) and gave up just one ace.
 
The Storm will now get set to play Emporia State, at 11 a.m., and then Midwestern State, at 3 p.m., Saturday to close out the Hampton Inn-vitational.
