Crimson Storm Fall in Five Sets to Stan State

Stanislaus State hands Southern Nazarene their first loss of the season, 3-2

DENTON, Texas — Southern Nazarene suffered its first loss of the season in its final match of the Denton Volleyfest, falling to Stanislaus State in five sets Saturday afternoon in Denton.

Stanislaus State grabbed early momentum in the first set, using a 15-kill effort to take a 25-23 win despite SNU keeping it tight late. The Crimson Storm quickly flipped the script in the second set.

Southern Nazarene broke through in the second set behind an error-free attack. SNU reeled off 13 kills on 22 swings with no errors for a .591 clip to turn the match around and roll to a 25-17 win to even it at 1-1.

The third set belonged to the Warriors. Stanislaus State used a 16-kill, .353 hitting performance to pull away midway through the set and hold off a late SNU push for a 25-20 win.

SNU answered once again this time in the fourth set. The Crimson Storm posted a match-high 16 kills and hit .359, using a late run to create separation and force a fifth with a 25-20 victory.

In the final set, both teams traded points throughout, but Stanislaus State scored two of the final three to edge Southern Nazarene 15-13 and take the match.

Kate Wright led SNU with 20 kills, 2 aces and 3 blocks, while Rayanna Mauldin added 15 kills and Maecie Hawthorne chipped in 9. The Storm finished hitting .281 with 62 kills, 10 aces and 8 blocks compared to .254 with 63 kills for the Warriors.

Emma Grace Moddelmog finished with 26 assists and 11 digs, Brelee Mauldin added 21 assists and a team-high 3 aces, and Sydney Marquez led the back row with 23 digs. Hannah Morgan added a team-high 4 blocks at the net.

The Crimson Storm will return to the Sawyer Center to host Southwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday, September 8 at 6:00 pm.
